UNRWA Chief: ‘…Air Filled With The Smell of Blood’

CROOSFIREARABIA – “The air was filled with the smell of blood,” Scott Anderson, deputy humanitarian Coordinator, UNRWA Affairs Director in Gaza said during his visit to the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis.

“Visiting the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis yesterday, I witnessed some of the most horrific scenes I have seen in my nine months in Gaza,” he added.

“This overstretched health facility admitted well over 100 of yesterday’s severe injuries. With not enough beds, hygiene equipment, sheeting, or scrubs, many patients were treated on the ground without disinfectants,” he pointed ot.

“Ventilation systems were switched off due to a lack of electricity and fuel, and the air was filled with the smell of blood,” he said according to the Palestine News Agency WAFA.

“I saw toddlers who are double amputees, children paralyzed and unable to receive treatment and others separated from their parents. I also saw mothers and fathers who were unsure if their children were alive. Parents told me in despair that they had moved into the ‘so-called humanitarian zone’ in the hope that their children would be safe there,” he said.

“My colleagues from the humanitarian community are doing everything possible to increase medical capacity in Gaza, where the health system has long been on the ropes. Yesterday, we provided referral services, as well as additional tents, beds, stretchers, disposables, and medications. But impediments to humanitarian operations prevent us from supporting people anywhere near the scale necessary,” Anderson added.

“Civilians must be protected at all times. We urgently need a ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages, respite for the people of Gaza, and a meaningful opportunity for healing to begin,” he concluded.

Shot 355 Times! Israel Fears Little Hind

Her name is Hind Rajab, a six-year-old girl who was killed by the Israelis while hiding in a car.

Unbelievable is the fact car was riddled with 355 bullets from an Israeli tank that kept pounding at the car with no mercy.

She was finally shot while surrounded by her unarmed dead relatives, an uncle, an aunt, three cousins who were fleeing Gaza city’s Tal Al Hawa at the end of January 2024.

The bodies of Hind and two paramedics who were sent to rescue her were found on 10 February, 2024. The story of the Killing of Hind Rajab is recounted at length on Wikipedia and many others have investigated the terrible incident in the following months.

Her name and images have continued to make headlines on the social media with a #HindRajab  tag since then, and because of the horrific nature of the killing as her body was found 12 days after she was killed with shocking audiotapes recalling her final moments, all alone, as she was killed with Israeli bullets.

Imagined: While the Israeli tank was shooting at them, one-cousin remained with her, 15-year-old Layan Hamdeh. When she was killed by more bullets, she was talking to officers in the Palestine Red Crescent Society. Then Hind picked up the phone and was told to keep hiding in the car.

Israel denied responsibility but all the evidence suggest it was their bullets. Today the “shot 355 times” continues to dominate the social media with the “6-year-old hiding in a car annihilated by an Israeli tank”.

Timeline: Mohammad Al Dief is Israel’s Nemesis

Quds News Network – The Israeli army claimed, Saturday, its attack on Al-Muwasi area in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, targeted Muhammad Al-Deif, overall commander of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, alongside other Hamas leaders. However, Hamas states the Israeli allegations are false.

While the Israeli army claimed today it attempted to assassinate al-Deif, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza reported an increase in the number of victims from the massacre committed by the Israeli army in Al-Muwasi area to 71 Palestinians, with 289 others injured. Later figures by Al Jazeera put the number of those killed at 91 and injured at 300.

Over the course of about three decades, Muhammad Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri, the overall commander of the Al-Qassam Brigades known as Muhammad Al-Deif, has remained a significant puzzle for Israel, which has failed in at least seven assassination attempts against him.

This detailed timeline provides a comprehensive overview of what we remember about Israel’s real and alleged attempts to assassinate Muhammad Al-Deif.

August 19, 2001

Two Israeli Apache bombarded cars in Gaza, killing a police officer in the Preventive Security Apparatus. Israel claimed that Hamas leaders, including Muhammad Al-Deif were the target but they survived.

Birth Under Bombs: 9 Months of Hell

Imagine being pregnant and knowing you are three times more likely to miscarry.
Imagine being pregnant and knowing you are three times more likely to die in childbirth.
Imagine being pregnant and experiencing the fear of death every single day.
Imagine being pregnant and feeling like the world has completely forgotten you.

This is the hell pregnant women in Gaza are living through every day.

In the 9 months, or 40 weeks, that the violence in Gaza has now raged on, women there have conceived, miscarried, and birthed their babies. Instead of spending 9 months safely and hopefully preparing for the birth of their baby, these women have spent the entirety of their pregnancy in constant fear.

22-year-old Diana discovered she was pregnant shortly after violence escalated last October and gave birth to her son, Yaman, under intense bombing and gunfire late last week.

“I had a difficult labour. I was so frightened as the bombing was intense and didn’t stop even for a minute. My mother was so afraid for me and the baby – she prayed and prayed that we’d still be alive by dawn.

“I gave birth to my son, Yaman at about 2am. There was no special care for the baby when he was born, and he was not fully examined. He has jaundice now which has affected his brain.”

Diana is not alone. Over 50,000 women are currently pregnant in Gaza. Around 180 are due to give birth today, but not all of them will make it that far. Pregnant women in Gaza have experienced so much trauma since October that they are three times more likely to miscarry than they were before.

For those who defy the odds and manage to carry their pregnancy to full-term, the likelihood is they will be forced to give birth in a tent, a temporary shelter, or even in the streets amid rubble. They will do this without painkillers, while bombs continue to drop around them, knowing that they are now three times more likely to die giving birth.

Expressing concern on forgetting women and their experiences in this conflict, Hiba Al Hejazi, CARE’s Regional Advocacy Advisor for the MENA Region said: “It’s abhorrent that women, and their experiences in this conflict, have largely been forgotten.

The international community has to step up and put them front and centre. We need a gendered response to this conflict, one that prioritises the needs and experiences of women, and funds the women leading their communities through crisis. We urgently need governments to use their diplomatic powers and bring an end to a conflict that is destroying lives, many that have only just begun.”

CARE International’s Palestinian partner in Gaza, Juzoor, has set up clinics offering ante- and post-natal care, and mobilised volunteers from its network of midwives to assist vulnerable women to deliver births safely in their shelters with specialised equipment. CARE has also distributed 5,500 Baby Kits, containing essential products such as baby clothes and sterilising wipes for pregnant mothers, many of whom have lost everything.

‘Its Like Guantanamo’ Freed Prisoner Says of Israeli Jail

Laying on a hospital bed in Beit Jala in the southern West Bank, Moazzam Khalil Abayat cannot believe he was released from the Negev prison in southern Israel.

Abayat, 37, from the West Bank city of Bethlehem, was released in a “shocking” health condition on Tuesday after a nine-month detention without charge under Israel’s notorious policy of administrative detention.

“Negev prison is like Guantanamo. I saw prisoners killed and trampled on with boots,” Abayat told Anadolu.

“Every night, we were severely beaten. Only last night, I wasn’t hit,” he said.

Despite being surrounded by family and friends at the hospital, Abayat remains disoriented, believing he is still in detention.

“After my arrest, I was subjected to military interrogation and accused of being a murderer. I have never killed anyone,” he recalled.

“I suffered fractures in my head and hand, I was beaten on sensitive and injured areas. I was put in a black bag as if I was dead.”

Abayat said far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir participated in torture at Ofer military prison, west of Ramallah.

“Prisoners are dying in jails. This is an appeal to everyone to take action to save them,” he said.

Abayat’s speech was occasionally incoherent, indicating he still experiences severe psychological distress as if he were still imprisoned.

Family in shock

Abayat’s father, Khalil, was shocked by the health condition of his son.

“The family is in great shock. Moazzaz seems like a completely different person,” he told Anadolu.

“My son was a bodybuilder, worked in a butcher shop, was sociable, and a breadwinner of five. Today, he has almost lost his memory, is nearly paralyzed, thin, unable to walk, and does not recognize many family members,” Khalil added.

He noted that Moazzaz’s weight dropped from around 110 kilograms to barely 50 kilograms.

“Moazzaz was beaten throughout his detention, from the moment he was arrested until his release.”

Brutally assaulted

Dr. Nizar Qumsiyeh, the medical director of the hospital, said, Abayat has various bruises and is in a severe psychological state.

“We have begun medical tests and are awaiting the results, but it is clear he believes he is still in prison and surrounded by jailers,” Qumsiyeh added.

“He needs further examination and follow-up to determine his dietary needs to regain his physical health and then begin potentially long-term psychological treatment.”

According to the Palestinian Prisoner Society, Abayat was brutally beaten during his arrest in late October 2023.

“He was subjected to a series of vicious assaults, including torture and starvation,” it said. “His health condition after his release today serves as a testament to what he endured during his detention.”

Abayat was previously detained twice by Israeli forces. He did not suffer any health problems before his latest arrest.

At least 3,380 Palestinians, including women and children, are currently held without charge in Israeli prisons, according to Palestinian figures.

Israel, flouting a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, has faced international condemnation amid its continued brutal offensive on Gaza since an Oct. 7, 2023 attack by Palestinian group Hamas.

Nearly 38,300 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and over 88,200 others injured, according to local health authorities.

Nine months into the Israeli war, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water, and medicine.

Israel stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, whose latest ruling ordered it to immediately halt its military operation in the southern city of Rafah, where over a million Palestinians had sought refuge from the war before it was invaded on May 6.
