Israel Frees 32 Palestinian Prisoners

Thirty-two Palestinians were released from Israeli jails on Saturday as part of the fourth batch of the prisoner swap deal between Israel and Hamas.

The freed prisoners were handed over to the International Red Cross from the Ofer Prison facility near Ramallah in the central occupied West Bank, in line with the terms of the cease-fire and prisoner swap deal that took effect on Jan. 19.

According to an Anadolu correspondent, hundreds of Palestinians gathered near the Ramallah Cultural Palace to welcome the freed prisoners, waving Palestinian flags and chanting in support of the Palestinian resistance and Gaza.

Despite earlier warnings by the Israeli army, the crowd gathered to receive the prisoners, who raised victory signs in defiance of Israeli orders.

Many of the released prisoners appeared in poor health, with some barely able to walk. They were taken to hospitals in Ramallah for medical checks and treatment, the Anadolu correspondent added.

Commenting on the freed Palestinians’ poor health, the Hamas group said this confirms “the brutality” of what Palestinians prisoners endure in Israeli jails.

Hamas described these violations as “war crimes and crimes against humanity that require immediate intervention by the international community, the UN and the rights’ group.”

Meanwhile, the International Red Cross staff were ‘angry’ over the way Israel released the Palestinian prisoners on Saturday as they were led out in shackles with their hands behind their heads, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz.

Earlier, the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, released three captives from Gaza and handed them over to the Red Cross.

A total of 183 Palestinians are expected to be released Saturday from Israeli jails, including 111 who were arrested by the Israeli army in Gaza after Oct. 7, 2023, according to the Hamas-run Prisoners’ Information Office.

Six more Palestinians were killed in Israeli overnight airstrikes on homes in Gaza City and Deir al-Balah city in the central Gaza Strip as the Israeli genocidal war continues unabated, local media reported on Wednesday morning.

Stray Dogs Feed on Bodies of Dead Palestinians – Al Jazeera

Footage aired by Al Jazeera showed stray dogs scavenging the bodies of lifeless Palestinians in northern Gaza, with Israeli soldiers present in the vicinity.

The distressing scenes prompted widespread outrage, with Palestinian resistance group Hamas condemning the incidents as emblematic of the “cruelty, sadism, and inhumanity” of the Israeli military and its leadership.

In a statement released, Tuesday, Hamas described the video as further evidence of a “systematic extermination” campaign in Gaza, where humanitarian teams have been denied access to retrieve bodies and assist victims. The video depicted stray dogs mauling bodies in areas where rescue efforts have been obstructed.

The group also accused the Israeli army of deliberately attacking civilians and targeting vital infrastructure, citing ongoing strikes on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia town. These strikes have damaged water tanks, fuel supplies, and oxygen facilities essential to medical care.

Hamas labeled the Israeli acts as “war crimes committed openly before the world” and called for urgent international intervention to halt genocidal actions in Gaza.

The group urged the international community to mobilize humanitarian aid and ensure the protection of civilians, emphasizing the need for accountability for war crimes committed during Israel’s ongoing genocide according to Anadolu.

Since 5 October, Israel launched a large-scale ground operation in northern Gaza to allegedly prevent Hamas from regrouping. Palestinians, however, accuse Israel of seeking to occupy the area and forcibly displace its residents.

Since then, no sufficient humanitarian aid, including food, medicine, and fuel, was allowed into the area, leaving the remaining population there on the verge of imminent famine.

The onslaught was the latest episode in a brutal Israeli war on the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 45,000 people, mostly women and children, since Oct. 7, 2023.

Last month, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on Gaza.

Quarter of Jews Want to Leave Israel After Gaza

A poll revealed, Saturday, about a quarter of Israelis have been thinking about leaving the country and settling abroad in the past year, due to the “current political and security situation,” the Jewish media reported.

The latest poll by the Israeli official Kan channel, showed 23 percent of Israeli respondants “thought about leaving the country in the past year, starting from October 2023 till October 2024), due to the current political and security situation.”

However the poll also showed that 67 percent of Israelis said they “did not think about leaving the country,” but the rest refused to answer the question.

Revealing is the fact that 14 percent of those who support the government coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have thought about leaving, compared to 36 percent of the opposition parties’ supporters.

Thus the poll showed “secularists are more inclined to leave, compared to Haredi (religious) Jews.”

The Kan channel’s survey showed however, that negative migration – that is Israelis leaving the country – was evident even before 7 October with the numbers of people exiting exceeding the number of new immigrants coming to Israel.

Kan stated this trend of negative migration seems to be continuing for 2024 which could worsen.

Last September, official Israeli data by the Central Bureau of Statistics showed a significant increase in this phenomenon  with more than 40,000 leaving in the first seven months of 2024.

In 2023, about 55,300 citizens immigrated from Israel, compared to 38,000 who immigrated in 2022, according to the same source as reported by the Anadolu news agency.
