Another School Year: 846,000 West Bank Students Sit at Their Desks Again!

About 846,000 students went back to schools in the West Bank, Sunday, marking the start of the 2026/2027 schoolastic year. These students are distributed across 2,537 government, private, and UNRWA schools, and are taught by around 54,000 teachers. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Education, the number of students in government schools is 634,294, distributed across 1,967 schools; 163,787 students are distributed across 480 private schools; and 48,208 students are distributed across 90 UNRWA schools. The number of teachers in government schools is 40,747; in private schools, 11,578; and in UNRWA schools, 1,871, bringing the total teaching staff to 54,196.

In the Gaza Strip, the educational process will begin on September 16 with the attendance of administrative and teaching staff, and students will join the education on the 19th of the same month, while the Ministry of Education and Higher Education is preparing to provide about 700 in-person educational points and 25 temporary schools, in addition to the continuation of virtual education for students unable to access in-person education, which will allow about 541,000 male and female students to continue their education, according to the available capabilities.

CROSSFIREARABIA – The Gaza Human Rights Center is warning about the continuation of the collapse of the educational system in the Gaza Strip in its fourth consecutive year. It stated the wide destruction of the schools, students and teachers and educational equipment has been one of the greatest victims of the Israeli genocide meted against the people of Gaza. In a statement, Sunday, the Center said the new school year comes for Gaza in the absence of any basis of an educational framework for thousands of children amid the destruction and displacement the people of Gaza were subjected to.

It stated and according to official figures that more than 21,051 male and female students were martyred during the start of this genocidal war while 19,886 pupils are no longer in school because of displacement, continual displacement, travel, detention and or injury. It added more than 532 male and female teachers in the government and private educational sectors and in UNRWA schools were killed. Also 769 employees in the Ministry of Education were also killed.

Before 7 October, 2023, the number of children in the school stream registered at 609,751 and it was expected they would reach 665,769 by the 2026/2027 scholastic year according to natural growth rates. But no more, for the initial estimates show the number of children eligible for school education stands at 625,832 according to the genocidal war as per the Palestine Information Center.
