This is my new painting called “The Mutilated Little Boy with His Mother.” It is a response to the ongoing destruction of the Gaza Strip. Thousands of children have suffered devastating injuries, including the loss of eyes, hands, and limbs as a result of missile strikes and explosions. This painting reflects on the lifelong consequences of surviving such violence. This is photograph that is shown for the first time of children from Yaffa (Jafa); these children are probably now our grandparents. The image highlights how our grandparents lived during that wonderful summer, playing on the beach in the Manshiyya neighborhood, while camel caravans traveled along the shore laden with crates of oranges. The photograph is from 1945.
