Captive Polin Appeals to Biden Before Bombing

The Hamas Qassam Brigades broadcast a recording, Thursday, 5 September, 2024, of an Israeli prisoner with American citizenship, who was killed by the occupation army and whose body and five  other prisoners were recovered last Saturday inside a tunnel in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

In the recording, slain prisoner Hersh Goldberg-Polin asked US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, and all American citizens to do everything they can to “stop the war and this madness and bring him home.”

He pointed out he became 23 years old just four days before his arrest at a concert in the Re’im area in the so-called “Gaza enveloped” on 7 October, 2023.

He highlighted the extent of the suffering he is experiencing in Gaza and said he does not remember the last time he saw the sun or breathed fresh air, but he stressed what is worse is the Israeli [government] attempt to bomb him without stopping “so it wouldn’t not bear responsibility and reach an agreement.”

Born in California

Goldberg-Polin, who was born in California and lives in occupied Jerusalem, said that since his arrival in Gaza, he has been trying to stay alive without any medical assistance, with little food and water.

He sent an emotional message to his family, stressing he knows they are doing everything they can to bring him home, and asked his family to stay strong for him.

Last April, the Qassam Brigades published a video recording of the prisoner Goldberg-Polin, in which he attacked the Netanyahu government and accused it of negligence and failure to work to release him and the rest of the detainees.

On 13 May, the Qassam Brigades announced it had lost contact with a group of resistance fighters guarding four Israeli prisoners in Gaza, including Goldberg-Polin, due to the Israeli bombing of the Strip.

Since last Monday, the Qassam Brigades began broadcasting the last messages of the six Israeli prisoners, starting with the prisoner Idan Yerushalmi, then Ori Danino, before broadcasting – Wednesday – a recording of the prisoners Alexander Lubnov and Carmel Gat.

All the recordings hold the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu and the security and military services responsible for what happened on 7 October, 2023, and all the captives demanded the speeding up of an exchange deal and for the popular demonstrations demanding their return continue so that they could return home alive.

Last Sunday, Al-Qassam broadcast a message to Israeli society stating that “Netanyahu chose the Philadelphi Corridor at the expense of liberating your prisoners,” noting that these captives were alive but have become a thing of the past, whilst stressing Netanyahu is creating dozens of Ron Arads.

On 23 April, the Brigades’ spokesman Abu Obeida said that the “the Ron Arad scenario may be the most likely to be repeated with the enemy’s prisoners in Gaza,” stressing that “the so-called military pressure will only push us to stand firm in our positions and preserve the rights of our people and not relinquish them,” according to JO24.

West Bank: Ticking Bomb For Netanyahu

Analysts believe that Benjamin Netanyahu’s extremist government is trying to impose its strategy of Judaizing the entire West Bank and expelling the Palestinians from there. This is in conjunction with the extermination war – made with US support – it is waging against civilians in the Gaza Strip. Others however, say what the West Bank is experiencing is nothing but a side show that can be stopped if Hamas exits the scene.

The Israeli occupation forces have moved into the northern West Bank areas, Wednesday morning, killing more than 10 people and injuring 20 others which many consider a systematic policy to deal with the West Bank as one of the arenas of the current war.

Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative Dr. Mustafa Barghouti says what is currently happening is a systematic extermination of Palestinians in the West Bank, which he said, is completely occupied by Israel.

In Al Jazeera’s “Gaza… What’s Next?” program Barghouti pointed out  the occupation’s strategy has become crystal clear as Benjamin Netanyahu and his fascist government are trying to transfer the war in the Gaza Strip to the West Bank and started bombing Palestinians there – especially in the camps – with planes and drones.

He added what the occupation is doing against the Palestinians in the West Bank camps coincides with the killings carried out by the settlers to expand the Jewish settlements in a dangerous and diverse manner, including the pastoral colonial outposts by deploying settlers with sheep to control the largest possible area of land.

Barghouti believes Israel is trying to eradicate the resistance, uproot the Palestinians, Judaize the state, and displace the residents of Gaza and the West Bank together in a war that is fully supported by the United States.

West Bank differs from Gaza

In contrast, Kenneth Katzman, a senior researcher at the Soufan Institute for Strategic Studies and International Security, says Washington is trying to resolve the crisis in Gaza in a way that differs from the way it is handling the West Bank, “which is experiencing a state of turmoil accompanying the war in Gaza and can be contained if the fighting stops.”

Katzman said that the West Bank has a legitimate authority that cooperates with Israel, and that the current violence there is mainly caused by the war in Gaza, “which the Joe Biden administration is trying to exclude from the electoral race and from the American foreign policy that is based on establishing peace in the Middle East.”

The problem, however, as he said, is that the Biden administration “fully agrees with Netanyahu on the need to eradicate Hamas completely, so that the current war will be the last and new faces will take over the rule of the Strip.”

But Barghouti responds to this argument by saying that the Palestinian Authority does not control anything in the West Bank, as evidenced by the fact that all Israeli army operations are carried out in Area A, which is supposed to be subject to it under the Oslo Accords.

Barghouti said that the United States and Israel want practical authority in Gaza and do not accept any national government, as evidenced by the fact that they did not accept democracy when Hamas came to power in 2006 and caused the fall of the national government that included all Palestinian components.

While Barghouti says that the Oslo Accords are dead because Israel has not implemented a single letter of it, Katzman says that the agreement is enforceable if Hamas is eliminated and the Authority becomes the sole representative of the Palestinians.

He added that “President Mahmoud Abbas does not resort to violence and therefore he can create a state of calm, although he is not ideal and has refused to hold elections for 20 years, in addition to being surrounded by suspicions of corruption.”

But Barghouti responded that the late President Yasser Arafat, who signed the Oslo Accords, “did not take anything and they poisoned him when he refused to give up Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, and Washington, which talks about Abbas’s corruption, does not talk about Netanyahu’s corruption, who continues the war to escape from prison,” according to JO24.

Israel Escalates Its War on Gaza

Israel is escalating its fighting in the Gaza Strip to improve its position in the Gaza ceasefire and hostage swap talks, it was stated Sunday.

“The Israeli security cabinet recently instructed the military to intensify its operations in Gaza to strengthen Israel’s position in the negotiations,” Walla reported, citing unnamed political sources.

The move coincides with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Israel, where Israeli security officials expect him to put significant pressure on Tel Aviv to reach an agreement with Hamas, according to Walla.

There has been no official Israeli statement on the matter according to the Anadolu news agency.

Ceasefire talks in the Qatari capital of Doha concluded Friday by presenting “a proposal that narrows the gaps” between Israel and Hamas that is consistent with the principles set out by US President Joe Biden on May 31.

Biden said in May that Israel presented a three-phase deal that would end hostilities in Gaza and secure the release of hostages held in the coastal enclave. The plan includes a ceasefire, a hostage-prisoner exchange and the reconstruction of Gaza.

For months, the US, Qatar and Egypt have been trying to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas to ensure a prisoner exchange and ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.

But mediation efforts have been stalled due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to meet Hamas’s demands to stop the war.

Complicity!

Sometimes, it is said that a picture is worth more than a thousand words!

Look at this one!

On 9 of August, 2024 the US through the Joe Biden administration announces that it will provide $3.5 billion in military aid to Israel.

On 10 August, the following day Israeli warplanes strikes a school in Gaza’s Daraj neigbourhood killing over 100 people while performing the dawn prayers.

The school was hit by three 2000-pound missiles that were also provided by the USA.

License to Kill!

By Saleem Ayoub Quna

The “next day” scenario for Gaza as outlined by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, in the wake of the Hamas surprise and bold assault on the Israeli settlements surrounding the Gaza Strip on 7 October 2023, did not sail the way he wished.

Instead, he and the Israeli establishment gradually came to realize that this war was more costly, complicated and longer than all previous wars Israel fought since 1948.

Even most Israeli pessimist strategists couldn’t have predicted a worse course of events!

Simultaneously, domestic and international pressure to free the 120-or-so remaining Israeli hostages, held by Hamas, by force or through negotiations, kept growing by the day.

Besieged by these mounting pressures and other legal problems at home, Netanyahu maneuvered his way to address a joint session of the American Congress on July 24, 2024.

Such a coup would be an additional mark of his statesmanship, he thought!

Aside from obvious theatrics and tactics including carefully-chosen vocabulary, Netanyahu feeling like he had hypnotized his listeners, received more than 50 “overdone” standing ovations during that showcase session!

Whether he was rightly shrewd or desperately wrong in this approach, i.e. in addressing a foreign nation’s elected assembly with such an aggressive language and style, rather than talking to his own constituency back home, is an open topic for debate by political scientists and historians!

But for the time being, let us look at some of Netanyahu’s main points.

No one can argue against Netanyahu’s own impression of himself. He only can admire the image reflected on his own mirror: A great leader whom destiny had chosen to play a big role in history!

Netanyahu Versus Churchill

I can only agree with one thing in common between Netanyahu and Churchill. Both addressed the American Congress, while their countries were engaged in a war with a third party in some faraway battlefields!

Britain then, was facing a dominant Germany which had all of Europe in its grip: Israel today, fighting a group of Palestinian militants known as Hamas, thriving in a besieged poverty-stricken, densely populated strip of land, that has been cut from the outside world for the last 18 years by a tight Israeli siege.

Comparing Germany of the 1940s to Gaza under Hamas in 2024, amounts to a flagrant insult to basic human intelligence!

Nevertheless, Netanyahu in his emotional address kept repeating that Israel was the most reliable ally of the US in the Middle East. By saying that he tried to insinuate to his VIP audience that they should not hesitate to take sides against his enemies, calling them barbarians!

In this regard, Gideon Levy, dubbed by Israeli right wing groups as Hamas Ambassador to Tel Aviv, in an article in the Ha’artz daily on July 28 2024, slammed those who attended the session.

Levy wrote: “Shame on you American legislators for applauding a man whom the International Court of Justice has recently declared as a war criminal”. Then he added “your support for this man means that you condone his crimes in Gaza, as if he was commissioned to do it in your behalf”!

Netanyahu then brought up one of his “favorite” haunting nightmares, “nuclear Iran”. He categorically attributed all Middle East problems to Iran. But no Congressman would have the courage to remind him, during the coffee break that the Middle East was never short of problems, long before the present regime in Iran came to power in 1979!

By addressing the UN Congress at this crucial moment, Netanyahu, aimed to bring home on his back, like an untimely Santa Clause, a bag stuffed with more illusions. Among these was a message to his home-based critics, that being the indispensable leader he is, he has influential allies abroad who share his concerns better than they do!

He also wanted to impress his friends and enemies alike, that he is that type of leader who combines word with deed to achieve political goals. In this regard, he managed, separately, to meet with the incumbent President Jo Biden, and the two other, potentially, would be leaders, Harris and Trump, in the near future.

Finally, Netanyahu’s ultimate unpronounced objective during his “last” visit to Washington, was to be able to continue the carnage in Gaza until his promised total victory was achieved; a goal that cannot be reached without the continuous flow of arms, ammunition and other types of financial and political support from the US.

“If you provide us with the arms we need, the fight against those barbarians, our common enemies, will continue on a faster pace and more efficiently”, he shouted!

In brief, Netanyahu was begging the American people through their elected Congressmen for a license to kill as many Palestinian civilians as it takes, until his “next day” scenario for Gaza comes true!

This opinion was especially written for Crossfire Arabia by Saleem Ayoub Quna who is a Jordanian author writing on local, regional and international affairs and has two books published.
