Heavy rains have inundated over 1,542 tents housing displaced civilians in the Gaza Strip in the past two days amid Israel’s genocidal war on the enclave, the Civil Defense Service said on Wednesday.
“Hundreds of tents were flooded with rainwater at a level exceeding 30 centimeters,” the agency said in a statement.
“Many people were reported to be shivering from the cold as their belongings were damaged by the rainwater,” it added.
The service said torrential rains have swept away 497 tents in Gaza City, 210 in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, 170 in Rafah and 665 in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
The Gaza Strip has been hit by a cold wave and torrential rains since Sunday, bringing more misery to the territory’s 2.3 million population.
Local health authorities said Monday that at least seven people, including six babies, froze to death due to the winter cold in the enclave, according to Anadolu.
The Israeli army has continued a genocidal war on Gaza that has killed over 45,500 victims, mostly women and children, since a Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, reducing the enclave to rubble.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
Yedioth Ahronoth acknowledged that after nearly 15 months since the start of the war on Gaza, Israel continues to pay a heavy price in wounded and dead every time it takes a step forward.
The newspaper continues that “…no one really understands the reason” why the “army takes two steps back.” It noted that every time the army announces the “cleansing” of an area, it states that the “terrorists” (Palestinian resistance fighters) return to it.
The newspaper asked: “What is happening behind the scene? After 15 months since the start of the war, we have proven to ourselves, to the enemy in Gaza, and to the entire Middle East, that we are failing to accomplish the mission.”
The Jewish daily therefore poses the other question and states: “Isn’t it a crime to send our sons over and over again to shed their blood in the same area,” stating that don’t “Israelis deserve senior leaders at the political level who know how to bear responsibility, and know how to determine policy, without excuses and without cover-up.”
This is while Maariv, another Jewish daily acknowledged that “Israel has begun to feel drowning in the Gaza quagmire and intellectual stagnation regarding the future,” adding: “We are paying a very heavy price.”
Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on Palestine, on Monday urged medical professionals around the world to sever ties with Israel as a direct response to the destruction of Gaza’s health care system.
“I urge medical professionals worldwide to pursue the severance of all ties with Israel as a concrete way to forcefully denounce Israel’s full destruction of the Palestinian healthcare system in Gaza, a critical tool of its ongoing genocide,” Albanese said on X.
Albanese’s statement comes as the ongoing conflict continues to devastate Palestinian infrastructure, with Gaza’s medical facilities being severely impacted by Israeli military actions.
Her comments reflect growing international concern over the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where hospitals and clinics have been targeted and overwhelmed by the relentless violence. The lack of essential medical supplies, infrastructure damage, and loss of life have left Gaza’s health sector struggling to cope.
Albanese also highlighted the case of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian doctor who has been detained by Israeli authorities, calling for his immediate release and adding the hashtag #FreeDrHussamAbuSafiya in support of his cause.
Israel has continued a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since a Hamas attack on Oct. 7 last year despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire according to Anadolu.
The second year of genocide in Gaza has drawn growing international condemnation, with officials and institutions labeling the attacks and blocking of aid deliveries as a deliberate attempt to destroy a population.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its deadly war on Gaza.

We’re concerned over the fate of Kamal Adwan Hospital’s Dr Hussam Abu Safiya: he must be released, says Amnesty. Concern may not be enough, Wilkinson adds.
