Trump’s Paradigm Shifts

Dr Khairi Janbek

Islolationism in American terms meant historically, the interests of the USA are best served by not getting entangled in wars across the Atlantic, nor in the political affairs of Europe and possibly beyond, while keeping the economic expansion going.

Now to what extent will the incoming administration of Donald Trump proceed with isolationism and to what extent it believes will serve US interests?; in the mean time let us not forget that people electioneering or euphoric, are not the same people in the Oval Office.

But still the first signs of isolationism are emerging in the field of US trade policy, with intended high customs and duties on imported goods from abroad.

This goes as well for the foreign policy of Trump which signals his distaste to negotiating with blocks and preferring bilateral agreements. This puts him in good standing with likeminded world leaders but certainly at odds with the EU, which by extension at odds with NATO also.

Ukraine

As for the current hot spots, Trump is accustomed to paradigm shifts, for a start he thinks that supporting Ukraine is a money losing project, and good business requires an atmosphere for peace. Therefore, most likely Trump will adopt a position of neutrality in this war, neither doing anything to harm Ukraine effectively, nor help it financially or militarily, while at the same time, trying to open diplomatic and trade dialogue with Russia.

He may take the initiative to urge negotiations between the two parties on the basis of a business deal, in other words concessions.  No Meg’s Russia and not totally sovereign Ukraine, in any case, in Trump’s eyes, it is a European war after all.

Mideast

Now when it comes to the Middle East, this can be more tricky.  Trump has good relations with the Gulf Arab leaders, leaders of Egypt and Jordan, but also he is committed to the security of Israel and has good relations with Netanyahu.

In a sense he has to square the circle if he wants to keep his relationships unscathed to deal with two most sour issues: The two state solution to the Palestinian problem, and the future of Iran, while taking into consideration, that both his allies, Egypt and Jordan are jittery about the issue of population transfer.

Trump’s option would be offering Netanyahu a free hand in Iran with US support, in exchange for a semblance of Palestinian self-rule, thus paving the way for deligitimising Hamas while legitimizing and presenting the continuation of war as a war between Israel and Iran, with Iran’s proxies being a legitimate target.

Arabs Don’t Believe Tramp Will End War on Gaza

Observers confirmed that incoming US president Donald Trump to occupy the White House will not change the view towards the Palestinian issue, as the Democrats and Republican are committed to an American political doctrine keen on the security, superiority and status of Israel.

Political analyst and lecturer at the Media Faculty at An-Najah National University Farid Abu Dhahir said “the Trump movement will not have a positive impact on the Palestinian reality, and will not see the end of the war unless it is within a plan and agreement made by Trump himself.”

Abu Dhahir told Quds Press the difference between Republicans and Democrats is not fundamental, especially with regard to internal matters… On the external level, they agree on preserving American interests in the world, but they differ in the way of managing this conflict.”

Abu Dhahir described Trump as “extremist and reckless… who does not care about anything, relying on the strength of the United States and its diplomatic, military and political power and influence on allies and those loyal to the US.”

Regarding the Democratic Party, he belives it “relies more on the method of evasion and the method of soft diplomacy to implement the plans of the United States of America.”

He believed these two parties completely agree on supporting the Israeli occupation in all circumstances and conditions.

War-mongering

“Even the Democratic Party, which uses soft diplomacy, has shown its true self in the conflict in Palestine, and never hesitated in sending tens and hundreds of thousands of tons of explosives, aircraft and other military equipment to the Israeli occupation.”

In turn, Palestinian writer and political analyst Khaled Maali said “Trump, being the next president of the United States will not depart from the present American policies that have not changed throughout the years and supported the Israeli occupation.”

Maali stressed that “the great reliance on the next president is an estimated shortcoming as he will continue on the path of his predecessor in supporting the occupation and its crimes.”

“Whoever believes that American interests, strategy and supreme interests can change with the change of the president is delusional and naive. It is true there is a margin, but it is so small it is not enough to change American interests.”

Maali says he is even more passimistic with the election of Trump and expects things to become worse, “as we have had some experience with him in his last term, and the woes and practices he brought on us, starting with moving the American Embassy to Jerusalem and/or proposing the Deal of the Century project.”

Americans went to the polls, Tuesday, to cast their votes in the 2024 US presidential elections and choose the 47th president of the United States and his deputy, as the initial results that unexpectedly brought back Trump to power with a whacking majority.

The Palestinian issue and the bloody war taking place Gaza were strongly present in the election campaign of all the candidates, who stressed they would work to change the reality if they came to power.

Trump: ‘Israel Will Cease to Exist if I am Not Elected President’

Ex-President Donald Trump, appearing at a pair of pro-Israel events, dramatically told attendees there that Israel “will cease to exist within two years” if American Jews vote for the Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Harris.

His comments have gone viral all over the social media with graphics of him and Harris with images of him deadly serious at the allegations he is making.

The same images show the Democratic president having a whale of a time, smiling, not appearing to be laughing off at what he is saying.

In his Washington speech at an antisemitism event, Thursday, Trump claimed he will be the “defender” of Jewish-Americans but he has to win back the White House seat, adding that if he doesn’t win it will be their fault, the voters.

“You have to defeat Kamala Harris more than any other people on Earth. Israel, I believe, has to defeat her. I’ve never said this before,” he said.

“My promise to Jewish Americans is this: With your vote, I will be your defender, your protector, and I will be the best friend Jewish Americans have ever had in the White House,” Trump bombasted.

“I’m at 40%; that means you got 60% voting for somebody that hates Israel,” Trump said, alluding to the vice president.

He told his audiences that they must turn the percentages around because “I was the best president ever for the people of Israel and Jewish people. I did more for them than any president and probably any president can or will do.”

Trump added that the Democrats are bad for “Israel, very bad…” and are taking away the pro-Israel groups’ lobbying power.

“Over the past 12 months, Kamala Harris has repeatedly demanded an immediate cease-fire to save Hamas,” accusing the Biden administration of “building a $237 million pier to save Hamas….every time there was a little rain, it fell apart,” he said.

“She has even suggested she would put a full arms embargo on Israel,” he continued.

“If these are positions she takes before the election, just wait to see what she does after the election.”

Later in the evening, at an event for the Israeli American Council, Trump continued the same theme.

Again, he appealed to Jewish-American voters whilst blaming them for not treating him properly, repeating again that he believed “Israel, in my opinion, will cease to exist within two years, and I believe I’m 100 percent,” if he is not elected as the next president of the United States.

Earlier in the night, at the antisemitism event, Trump called on his Democratic opponent to “disavow the support of all Hamas sympathizers, anti-Semites, Israel haters, on college campuses and everywhere else,” according to the Quds News Network.

License to Kill!

By Saleem Ayoub Quna

The “next day” scenario for Gaza as outlined by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, in the wake of the Hamas surprise and bold assault on the Israeli settlements surrounding the Gaza Strip on 7 October 2023, did not sail the way he wished.

Instead, he and the Israeli establishment gradually came to realize that this war was more costly, complicated and longer than all previous wars Israel fought since 1948.

Even most Israeli pessimist strategists couldn’t have predicted a worse course of events!

Simultaneously, domestic and international pressure to free the 120-or-so remaining Israeli hostages, held by Hamas, by force or through negotiations, kept growing by the day.

Besieged by these mounting pressures and other legal problems at home, Netanyahu maneuvered his way to address a joint session of the American Congress on July 24, 2024.

Such a coup would be an additional mark of his statesmanship, he thought!

Aside from obvious theatrics and tactics including carefully-chosen vocabulary, Netanyahu feeling like he had hypnotized his listeners, received more than 50 “overdone” standing ovations during that showcase session!

Whether he was rightly shrewd or desperately wrong in this approach, i.e. in addressing a foreign nation’s elected assembly with such an aggressive language and style, rather than talking to his own constituency back home, is an open topic for debate by political scientists and historians!

But for the time being, let us look at some of Netanyahu’s main points.

No one can argue against Netanyahu’s own impression of himself. He only can admire the image reflected on his own mirror: A great leader whom destiny had chosen to play a big role in history!

Netanyahu Versus Churchill

I can only agree with one thing in common between Netanyahu and Churchill. Both addressed the American Congress, while their countries were engaged in a war with a third party in some faraway battlefields!

Britain then, was facing a dominant Germany which had all of Europe in its grip: Israel today, fighting a group of Palestinian militants known as Hamas, thriving in a besieged poverty-stricken, densely populated strip of land, that has been cut from the outside world for the last 18 years by a tight Israeli siege.

Comparing Germany of the 1940s to Gaza under Hamas in 2024, amounts to a flagrant insult to basic human intelligence!

Nevertheless, Netanyahu in his emotional address kept repeating that Israel was the most reliable ally of the US in the Middle East. By saying that he tried to insinuate to his VIP audience that they should not hesitate to take sides against his enemies, calling them barbarians!

In this regard, Gideon Levy, dubbed by Israeli right wing groups as Hamas Ambassador to Tel Aviv, in an article in the Ha’artz daily on July 28 2024, slammed those who attended the session.

Levy wrote: “Shame on you American legislators for applauding a man whom the International Court of Justice has recently declared as a war criminal”. Then he added “your support for this man means that you condone his crimes in Gaza, as if he was commissioned to do it in your behalf”!

Netanyahu then brought up one of his “favorite” haunting nightmares, “nuclear Iran”. He categorically attributed all Middle East problems to Iran. But no Congressman would have the courage to remind him, during the coffee break that the Middle East was never short of problems, long before the present regime in Iran came to power in 1979!

By addressing the UN Congress at this crucial moment, Netanyahu, aimed to bring home on his back, like an untimely Santa Clause, a bag stuffed with more illusions. Among these was a message to his home-based critics, that being the indispensable leader he is, he has influential allies abroad who share his concerns better than they do!

He also wanted to impress his friends and enemies alike, that he is that type of leader who combines word with deed to achieve political goals. In this regard, he managed, separately, to meet with the incumbent President Jo Biden, and the two other, potentially, would be leaders, Harris and Trump, in the near future.

Finally, Netanyahu’s ultimate unpronounced objective during his “last” visit to Washington, was to be able to continue the carnage in Gaza until his promised total victory was achieved; a goal that cannot be reached without the continuous flow of arms, ammunition and other types of financial and political support from the US.

“If you provide us with the arms we need, the fight against those barbarians, our common enemies, will continue on a faster pace and more efficiently”, he shouted!

In brief, Netanyahu was begging the American people through their elected Congressmen for a license to kill as many Palestinian civilians as it takes, until his “next day” scenario for Gaza comes true!

Biden Pulls Out of Race, Nominates Harris

US President Joe Biden is dropping out as a candidate for the US presidential race.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down…” Biden said in a statement posted on X according to Anadolu.

News of his pullout is trending on the social media.

After announcing his decision he immediatetly endorced his Vice-President Kamala Harris for the Democratic Party for the elections that will be held on 5 November.

Several Democrats has pressured Biden to step aside following repeated mistakes and declining popularity reported the Quds News Network.

Biden lost much of his popularity due to his unlimited support for the occupation state of Israel and being directly involved in the genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza the network added.

As usual Donald Trump who is expected to make a comeback and be elected again as the US next president made fun of the Biden resignation and the Harris replacement.
