Pope Francis is calling for an investigation to determine whether a genocide is taking place in the Gaza Strip, the Vatican News agency reported on Sunday.
“According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide. It should be carefully investigated to determine whether it fits into the technical definition formulated by jurists and international bodies,” he said in a passage from his new book of interviews, Hope Never Disappoints: Pilgrims Towards a Better World, which is due out this Tuesday according to Anadolu.
“I am thinking above all of those who leave Gaza in the midst of the famine that has struck their Palestinian brothers and sisters given the difficulty of getting food and aid into their territory,” the pontiff added, referring to Israeli blockades which only allow a trickle of aid required by over 2 million people into the embattled enclave.
Israel has continued a devastating offensive on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, killing nearly 44,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and rendering the enclave almost uninhabitable.
It also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the blockaded enclave.
As the Israeli occupation persists in its siege on the Gaza Strip for the 13th consecutive month, blocking the entry of humanitarian aid and fuel, more than 2 million Palestinians are enduring harsh conditions to meet their daily needs, leaving them at risk of death from starvation and the lack of essential resources.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza announced that the Israeli occupation “committed six massacres against families in the Gaza Strip, of which 47 martyrs and 139 injuries arrived to hospitals during the past 24 hours.
The ministry said in a press statement received by Quds Press, Sunday, that “a number of victims are still under the rubble and on the roads, and ambulance and civil defense crews cannot reach them.”
It reported that the death toll from the Israeli aggression has risen to 43,846 martyrs and 103,740 injuries since October 7 of last year.
The ministry called on the families of martyrs and missing persons from the aggression on Gaza to complete their data by registering on its website, to complete all data through its records.
Palestinian Mahmoud Assaf, a PhD holder and author, was forced to make a painful decision to meet his daily needs due to the severe Israeli blockade, rising prices, and lack of humanitarian supplies since the ongoing genocide in Gaza began.
Dr. Assaf may have to sell the books he owns to a clay oven owner, where they will be used to light fire.
For over a year, the Israeli occupation has imposed a severe blockade on Gaza, blocking gas trucks, fuel, and essential humanitarian aid, amid a firewood shortage, forcing thousands of Palestinian families to burn books and other materials to light fires and meet basic needs.
