Duwairi: Israel Not in Position For ‘Ground War’

Military expert Major-General Fayez Al-Duwairi said the Lebanese Hezbollah’s bombing of the Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv is a qualitative but a disciplined shift so that things do not develop into a large-scale ground battle both sides are trying to avoid so far.

Earlier Wednesday, Hezbollah announced targeting the Mossad headquarters in the suburbs of Tel Aviv with a “Qader I” ballistic missile, in a precedent move since the beginning of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip about a year ago.

The party stated it targeted Mossad headquarters because it “is responsible for assassinating leaders and blowing up communication devices.”

According to Al-Duwairi, the party did not target Tel Aviv directly but rather targeted a military headquarters responsible for blowing up the pagers, which means it is an operation similar to the assassinations carried out by Israel in the Beirut suburb.

Therefore, he believes that the targetting does not mean bringing Tel Aviv into the unfolding battle, saying current Israel’s operations in Lebanon do not aim to destroy the suburb randomly. He added this reflects the keenness of both parties not to escalate in a way that leads to an open ground war, even if the comprehensive war is already underway.

No ground war yet

He explained the ground operation is the missing part of the comprehensive war between the two sides, suggesting Israel will continue to maintain this situation for another period in the hope of breaking Hezbollah’s will and subjecting it to its dictates.

He said Israel is using the Gaza Strip approach in Lebanon, but warned that the military solution will not be achieved and that Hezbollah will not retreat beyond the Litani River as Israel wants.

Al-Duwairi described Hezbollah’s operations as a war of pressure on the Israeli economy and society and not a war of attrition, noting the latter is based on targeting the civilian and military dimensions and that will only be completed through a ground confrontation.

He expected that a ground war would only break out if Netanyahu felt that the current pressure would not force Hezbollah to retreat. However, he pointed out that Israel previously remained in the Litani area for 20 years and was forced to leave due to the Lebanese resistance.

Hezbollah must rely on itself

He said the situation in southern Lebanon is completely different from Gaza, noting that Hezbollah will not deploy its forces on every square meter but will rely on the combat contracts that will grant it the desired victory in the end, because a ground confrontation means great losses for the occupation army.

Regarding Hezbollah’s strengths in a ground war, Al-Duwairi said they are represented in its ability to manage the battle and activate the unity of the arenas in Yemen and Iraq in an effective manner and not symbolically as is the case now according to Al Jazeera.

Military Angle: Ending Hamas After 1 Year Wrong

Military expert Maj-Gen Fayez Al-Duwairi said the Israeli army’s talk about needing another year to eliminate the capabilities of Hamas is inaccurate.

He pointed out there is a need to differentiate between the political entity of the Islamic Resistance Movement and its military wing represented by the Al-Qassam Brigades.

Al-Duwairi added on Al Jazeera when the occupation army speaks, it means the military wing of Hamas, stressing that even these brigades cannot be eliminated in the said period.

The military expert described the occupation army’s talk is at best “optimistic.” He pointed to previous Israeli military reports that stated it would take years to achieve this goal.

He emphasized eliminating Al-Qassam will not be an easy task  because it has already succeeded in rebuilding its forces and rotating its power in the last months through the Israeli missiles that were fired on Gaza but didn’t explode, the number of which equal 10 percent and estimated at about 9 tons so far according to Al-Duwairi.

He concluded stopping the firing of missiles from the Gaza Strip towards Israeli cities “will remain out of reach even if the occupation army says otherwise.”

Regarding the occupation army’s talk that the Black Hawk helicopter crashed (reported Wednesday) in Rafah due to technical and/or human malfunction, Al-Duwairi said this does not rule out the military factor.

This is because it crashed at night while transporting a wounded person from a combat zone. He said that the helicopter may have been exposed to gunfire from the resistance, which forced the pilot to act in a way that brought down the plane even if it was not hit.

Israelis Face Deadly Resistance Battles After 11 Months

Military expert Major-General Fayez Al-Duwairi said that the Israeli army does not convey the true picture of what it is doing in the Gaza Strip. He added that the occupation army talks about a third phase of military operations that is supposed to be a stage of raids while it is continuing to kill civilians in many ways.

He added – in a military analysis on Al Jazeera – the suffering inflicted by the occupation on civilians in the Strip is not reflected on the Palestinian resistance, which created a new concept of asymmetrical warfare, dominated by the “tunnels war” where resistance fighters continue to  emerge from in specific times to carry out specific and deadly military missions.

Al-Duwairi pointed out the Palestinian resistance groups dominated by Hamas, Islamic Jihad and others are still, after about a year of war, capable of fighting and have a stockpile of weapons, fighters and fighters that are being recruited by the day according to Jo24. The war on Gaza was launched soon after 7 October, 2023.

He said Hamas did not take part in the last two wars – 2021 and 2022 – started by Israel on the Gaza Strip, which helped it provide a stockpile of weapons for this present war that is lasting longer than necessary because the world forgot about the atrocities of Gaza as he points out.

The military expert reiterated that the resistance, which continues to bomb the settlements and bases around the Gaza Strip and southern Tel Aviv, confirms its ability to continue the war for longer than anybody has expected.

At the same time it is finding it more difficult for the resistance groups to fight from “zero distances” because of the geographical alterations of Gaza. The Israeli army are now taking up positions far from residential areas with the exception of Tel Sultan, which has been witnessing violent battles for more than three months, he concluded.

Israeli Soldiers Beg to Exit The Gaza Quagmire

Major-General Fayez Al-Duwairi said the letter of dozens of reserve officers in the Israeli occupation army to their Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, is a sobering reality of what these soldiers are going through in the hard fields of Gaza.

The strategic expert explained – in his Gaza military analysis – the one fighting in battle is the most honest because he is directly on the ground, noting the words of Israeli politicians cannot be taken seriously because they are seeking to exploit the war for their political goals.

He said the concept of victory in asymmetric warfare is completely different from that of the traditional one “if the weak party can continue fighting and survive, it is victorious, while the strong party is considered a loser if it does not win.”

Zero distance

The Al-Qassam Brigades – the Hamas military wing – and the rest of the factions are still fighting. Videos of the resistance in various combat zones, prove that the occupation army remains fearful of fighting from zero distance he said in his daily analysis on Al Jazeera.

Al-Duwairi stressed the army has suffered great losses in the strategic context that will require years to compensate for. In this war it has lost its superiority, has not be able to win this “conservative war”, undermined its deterrence and failed in its ability to work on the home front.

The expert added the statements of Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant in which he hoped the circle of war would not expand are a result of what the occupation officers soldiers about the tough time they have been having in Gaza whilst recalling statements by the Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari admitting that eliminating Hamas is like throwing dust in the eyes.

Al-Duwairi concluded the message of the officers is “stop swimming against the tide and recognize the reality, which is our inability to resolve the war with our weakest of regional enemies and end it, and talk of victory is not convincing and cannot be achieved.”

Out of reach

Dozens of reserve officers in the occupation army sent a message to Halevi in which they confirmed that achieving victory in Gaza is still out of reach. They stated: “We, who came from the battlefield know well that the situation is still far from achieving victory,” as reported by Israeli Channel 14.

The officers, who spent 200 days of reserve service in Gaza, stressed “the enemy still has cross-border capabilities, drones, explosive drones, mortar shells, a huge tunnel infrastructure and many living terrorists ready to continue fighting against us,” as they described it, according to Jo24.

The ‘Resistance Secret’ to Sustained Fighting

Military expert Major-General Fayez Al-Duwairi, said the different resistance groups have long adapted to the ground field in Gaza and allowed them to continue fighting the Israeli army since last October 2023.

It was necessary for the resistance to develop its combat performance in the battlefield after it resorted to confrontational stances in the first stage of the war that cost the movement both materially and in terms of human resources, Al-Duwairi of Al Jazeera explained, in his analysis of the military scene in Gaza.

The military and strategic expert described the resistance development, interms of performance and new tactics as giving then greater  “heights of skill and intelligence” that was necessary in the latter stages of the war as the Israeli occupation penetrated the whole of Gaza and its north.

He added it is here where the resistance started moving in small groups and harnessed all available means to achieve their goal of beating the enemy.

Thus the ambushes and the use of TNT fillings and explosive devices appeared in a greater way and effectively against the occupation’s military armor, especially later in the battles of Khan Yunis and Rafah in the south, he maintained.

Regarding the return of the Israeli soldiers to Khan Yunis for the third time, the military expert, said the Zionist army were not able to achieve its goals in the previous two times, noting the Khan Yunis Brigade of the Qassam Brigades – the Hamas military wing – was by far superior as a fighting force.

He added the Israeli fighting in Khan Yunis, the first time, lasted for months, during which they failed to find the prominent leaders of the Qassam Brigades, and failed as well to discover and destroy the underground strategic tunnels and the detained Israeli prisoners as pointed out in the Jo24 website.

The occupation withdrew from Khan Yunis last April, returned to it, especially in its eastern areas on 22 July, before withdrawing from it again at the end of the month.

The Israeli war in the Gaza Strip entered its 11th month, and resulted in the martyrdom of 39,699 Palestinians, including 16,314 children and 10,980 women, according to data from the Ministry of Health in Gaza, in addition to the widespread destruction of schools, hospitals and infrastructure.
