Can Israel Create ‘Mini-Gazas’ in The West Bank?

A UN independent expert warned, Monday, Israel’s intensification of its military assault against the northern West Bank marks a dangerous escalation of grave violence and human rights violations committed by Israel against the Palestinian people since October 7, 2023.

“Israel’s genocidal violence risks leaking out of Gaza and into the occupied Palestinian territory as a whole,” warned Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967.

“The writing is on the wall, and we cannot continue to ignore it. There is mounting evidence that no Palestinian is safe under Israel’s unfettered control. While this was also true before Hamas’ attack on 7 October, the risk has since intensified,” Albanese said.

Continuous genocidal incitements by top Israeli leaders and officials remain unpunished, and are often acted upon by soldiers, armed settlers and others, revealing the intent to destroy the Palestinian people under occupation. Increasingly loud calls by Israeli leaders for turning the towns in the West Bank and refugee camps into a “mini-Gaza”, are translating into military operations that are causing heavy death tolls and widespread destruction to the West Bank’s urban areas.

Systematic aerial and ground attacks on Jenin, Nablus, Tulkarem and Tubas governorates, particularly targeting refugee camps, have intensified in the past few months. Recently, on 28 August, Israeli occupation forces launched a full-scale military operation against these areas that have already killed 22 Palestinians and injured dozens.

Bulldozers have destroyed critical infrastructure, including roads, water and energy grids. New checkpoints have been established, following Israel’s Foreign Minister Katz’s declaration that “We must deal with the threat just as we deal with the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza, including the temporary evacuation of Palestinian residents and whatever steps are required. This is a war for everything, and we must win it.”

An evacuation order has been issued to Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem and a city hospital in besieged Jenin, currently treating 150 patients. The Israeli occupation forces have blocked entry to the three main hospitals and imposed a curfew, while Israeli ground forces have invaded and besieged Shu’fat refugee camp in East Jerusalem.

The expert notes that since 7 October 2023, 652 Palestinians have been killed outside of Gaza, including 151children, thousands injured, over 3,300 have been displaced and over 12,000 arbitrarily detained, de facto hostages of the unlawful occupying Power.

The increasing violence in the West Bank coincides with unprecedented levels of displacement, depopulation and land confiscation carried out by the State of Israel in collaboration with settler militias in the area since the Oslo era. This continues even after the International Court of Justice concluded that this occupation is unlawful, and Israel must dismantle it together with the colonies and its associated regime.

“Apartheid Israel is targeting Gaza and the West Bank simultaneously, as part of an overall process of elimination, replacement and territorial expansion” she said.

“The long-standing impunity granted to Israel is enabling the de-Palestinisation of the occupied territory, leaving Palestinians at the mercy of the forces pursuing their elimination as a national group,” warned the expert.

“The international community, made of both states and non-state actors, including companies and financial institutions, must do everything it can to immediately end the risk of genocide against the Palestinian people under Israel’s occupation, ensure accountability and ultimately end Israel’s colonisation of Palestinian territory.”

Palestinians: Down But By No Means Beaten!

Palestinian analysts confirm the military operation launched by the Israeli occupation on the camps in the northern occupied West Bank – “Summer Camps” – aim to eradicate the resistance through excess force and the destruction of their popular base and is considered more dangerous than the “Defensive Shield” operation it carried out in the occupied West Bank in 2002.

Palestinian political analyst Ismat Mansour stressed the most dangerous thing about the last Israeli military operation emanates from what Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said about evacuating the residents of the camps to humanitarian places to carry out cleansing operations,” a sentence also made by the army spokesman when the operation was launched.

“The goal of these military operations are clear, and represented in destroying the Palestinian infrastructure and turning the camps into uninhabitable places with creeping and gradual ethnic cleansing,” Mansour told Quds Press.

Mansour attributed these plans to the declared programs of the Israeli occupation government and “its structure, ideology, and agenda – highlighted by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to resolve the conflict,” in reference to the aim to annex the West Bank to the occupation state.

Therefore Mansour called for “the necessity of working to find a unified collective plan that mobilizes all [Palestinian] energies to confront this criminal mentality.”

Expert Azzam Abu Al-Adas considers the current Israeli military operation in the West Bank is far “more dangerous than that of the Operation Defensive Shield carried by the Jewish army in 2002.”

He pointed out “when Operation Defensive Shield was executed, the Palestinian factions were present in the West Bank and existed in terms of infrastructure, finance, and military, and had the ability to rebuild their forces and compensate for losses. Now, the factions have been dismantled financially, militarily, and socially.”

“Operation Defensive Shield was carried out at a time when the number of settlers in the West Bank was barely 70,000, and now it is 800,000, which means that eliminating the resistance will increase the encroachment of the army and settlers,” according to his thinking.

Abu Al-Adas pointed out head of the Israeli government of occupation Benjamin Netanyahu, “is in dire need of a victory, and since he failed to achieve it in Gaza, he will claim this such an image in the West Bank raise his popularity, especially among the settlers and will increase his chances in the upcoming elections, which he intends to run for.”

“In 2002, the occupation was still living under the shock of the then prime minister Ariel Sharon who entered Al-Aqsa Mosque in 2000, and Al-Aqsa Mosque was out of the game, but now if Israel succeeds in eliminating the resistance act it means the building of the synagogue which Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir talked about and displacing the people of Jerusalem” becomes more real.

The occupation forces began a large-scale military operation targeting resistance fighters in Jenin, Tulkarm and Tubas in the northern West Bank at dawn Wednesday, where large Israeli forces invaded all areas, cities and camps in the northern West Bank from several axes, calling it operation “Summer Camps”.

The Israeli media reported the military operation is the largest since Operation Defensive Shield in 2002, and carried out with the Israeli warplanes, army, Israeli Internal Security Service (Shabak) and other undercover forces with the use of helicopters and fighter jets extensively.

Operation Defensive Shield was a military operation carried out by Israel to occupy and attack areas of the Palestinian Authority, after the Palestinian soldier Abdul Basit Odeh carried out the Park Hotel operation, which is considered one of the largest suicide operations in the history of the Palestinian resistance.

For Israel the main goal of the operation was to eliminate the second Palestinian Intifada which began in 2000 after Sharon, as prime minister, stormed the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.

“Operation Defensive Shield” was launched on 29 March, 2002 and ended on 10 May.

West Bank on Fire Against Israeli Occupation

What was a premonition yesterday, today it has become a reality. What did not exceed the level of fear has now become part of daily circumstance.

In Jenin, Tulkarm, Nablus, Hebron, Tubas, Qalqilya – all cities of the West Bank – it has become necessary for the Israeli occupation army to be no less vigilant than in its battle in Gaza and/or southern Lebanon according to the Palestine Information Center.

Today, the battle is taking place on the sides of Israeli army barracks, checkpoints, and headquarters. The West Bank is today not just a support front for Gaza, but has become part of the front lines against Israeli occupation.

The resistance escalation in the West Bank has been the most feared by Israel since the outbreak of the Al Aqsa Flood Battle in Gaza; it is the closest front to it and therefore the most dangerous to the occupation.

Traditional military measures of searches, raids, arrests, and setting up checkpoints are no longer of any use. The resistance has prepared itself to confront all of this and diversified its method of resistance to the occupation including detonating explosive devices in Israeli vehicles which has never happened before.

The resistance in the West bank has begun to intensify its attacks on the enemy and present its heroism and sacrifices to relieve the pressure on the Gaza Strip, suffering from the scourge of genocide and brutal massacres now for the 327th consecutive day. The number of martyrs and missing persons in Gaza has now exceeded 50,000, together with the destruction of all aspects of life in the Strip.

This is what prompted the West Bank resistance to act supporter to Gaza, with sacrifices of more than 640 martyrs and about 5,400 wounded, in addition to the thousands of detainees, since the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Flood.

At the same time, the Israeli government sought to exploit the war in the Gaza Strip to implement its plans for settlement expansion and the establishment of new outposts in the West Bank with the absence of any accountability for these crimes. The extreme rightwing Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu sought to impose a new reality in Jerusalem increasing the settlers’ incursions incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque, to the point were National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir announced his intention to build a synagogue on the grounds of the holly mosque.

The Israeli policy of Palestinian assassinations increased in intensity with the escalation of the resistance against the occupation forces. Hardly a day goes by without the West Bank burying one or more of its fighters in a cowardly Israeli targeting, the latest of which was the assassination of 10 martyrs in Jenin and Tubas as part of the extensive aggression announced by the occupation army in the northern West Bank.

In a new criminal move, the occupation army announced, Tuesday, the start of what it called a “large-scale operation” in the cities of the northern West Bank of Jenin, Tulkarm, Tubas, the camps, and several neighborhoods of Nablus. According to Israeli media, the occupation army intends to destroy the infrastructure of the resistance in the northern West Bank through such aggression, describing it as the most violent and extensive since Operation Defensive Shield in 2002.

In conjunction with this announcement, the Mujahideen of Qassam Brigades, along with other resistance factions, engaged in an armed clash with the occupation forces in Tulkarm as Qassam Brigades detonated explosive devices in Israeli military vehicles as they stormed the Jenin camp, while targeting a military tower at the entrance to the Al-Arroub camp north of Hebron.

Saraya Al Quds of Islamic Jihad shot down an Israeli drone in the Nour Shams camp in Tulkarm while wounding a number of occupation soldiers at sniper positions fortified inside a house. It was also announced the detonation of an explosive device in a military bulldozer in Nablus, achieving direct injuries among its crew.

The occupation is trying to silence the voice of the resistance by committing more crimes in the West Bank but it is not succeeding as the latest military operations  of Al-Qassam Brigades fighters believe the Israeli army is drowning in a quagmire  in Nablus as fierce clashes with enemy forces in Balata camp are heightened.

The occupation’s announcement of the start of a new aggression in the West Bank, after months of escalation, is an official admission that the resistance in the West Bank is very strong, and that the Israelis know as stated by Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz on Wednesday morning:

“The threat in the West Bank must be dealt with like Gaza and a temporary evacuation of people must be implemented, as this is a war on everything.”

With this escalation, it can be said that the occupation has begun a difficult confrontation that may cost it a lot as the West Bank is causing the enemy great pain that has never been witnessed in the history of the conflict with it, and the military escalation with the Palestinian resistance groups may contribute greatly to the changing the scene taking place in Palestine, and on all axes of support.

Wafaa Jarrar: ‘Human Shield’ Survivor Succumbs to Her Death

She died a martyr for freedom. Wafaa Jarrar will be remembered for her stiff resistance to Israeli occupation which used her as a human shield that led to the amputation of her two legs and final death.

The 50-year-old wounded and liberated prisoner Wafaa Jarrar died Monday, two months after she was critically injured last May, succumbing to her wounds because of Israeli neglect and deliberate negligence.

“We mourn the icon of loyalty and giving, our beloved mother, the patient and steadfast prisoner, the wounded and martyr Wafaa Nayef Zahdi Jarrar “Umm Hudhayfah”…as she joins the ranks of martyrs and leaders in the Battle of the Flood of Al-Aqsa,” the Jarar family said in a statement, and as reported in the Palestine Information Center.

“More than two months after her injury and the amputation of both of her legs, the occupation army arrested her from her home in Al-Marah neighborhood Jenin on 05-21-2024,” the statement added.

The Israeli occupation forces arrested Jarrar from her home on 21 May during their aggression on Jenin and its two camps. The occupation later announced she was injured, transferred her to the Israeli Afula Hospital and an four-month administrative detention order was issued against her.

The serious injuries she sustained led to the amputation of her legs above the knee, and other injuries to her body and which lead to many other health problems.

Following the deterioration of her health, the Israeli occupation evaded treating her; they cancelled her administrative detention order, released her, and refused to continue her treatment in Israeli hospitals.

In a previous statement the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor held the Israeli occupation army fully responsible for the life and safety of Ms. Wafaa Nayef Jarrar. It noted the Israeli army arrested and detained her for four hours in a dangerous area where clashes were taking place, deliberately exposing her life to direct danger.

The Monitor explained what she was subjected to from the moment of her arrest until her release reflecting the repeated and systematic pattern Palestinians, men and women, face when arrested by the Israeli army in the occupied Palestinian territories.

It includes arbitrary arrests, abuse, their use as human shields, torture, and denial of medical care, and Israeli army’s evasion of responsibility for their harm and suffering resulting from its crimes and violations it inflicted against them.

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor explained it followed up on Israeli army’s arrest of Ms. Jarrar on May 21, from her home in Jenin, north West Bank, and subsequent announcement she had been seriously injured in an explosion inside the Israeli military vehicle she was detained in for four hours and then the administrative detention order issued against her before handing her over to the Palestinian liaison despite her critical health condition and loss of consciousness.

The Monitor confirmed this is an attempt by the Israeli army to evade its responsibility for the serious injuries she sustained during her detention, which led to the amputation of her legs and damage to her lungs and spine, and to evade its legal obligations related to providing her with medical care and necessary treatment.

The Monitor further confirmed Ms. Jarrar’s arrest was arbitrary. It stated there was no reason to justify her arrest, coming within the context of individual and collective arrest campaigns by the Israeli army against Palestinians wherever they are found.

It added the Israeli army made this arrest in a violent manner, storming her house, destroying most of its contents, and looting all the money and jewelry inside the house and which Ms. Jarrar’s family has not recovered up till now.

The Monitor confirmed the Israeli army had not directly taken Ms Jarrar to a detention but instead to a dangerous military area of operations with exchange of fire and where explosive devices were thrown at its vehicles and the jeep she was in.

This indicates the Israeli army deliberately decided to keep her there knowing full well this would expose her to the risk of death and/or injury.

It appears the Israeli army was trying to exploit Ms. Jarrar’s presence in the area of its military attack on Jenin, to facilitate its military operations and shield and fortify its personnel and military vehicles.

Ms. Jarrar is a local activist and coordinator of the Jenin Association of Martyrs and Prisoners, and a mother of four children. Her husband, 58-year-old Abdul Jabbar Muhammad Ahmad Jarrar has been detained since 7 February, 2024, on a sixth-month administrative detention order. He previously spent 16 years in Israeli prisons.

Wafaa Jarar was an active community worker, launching the Mothers of Martyrs Gathering in Jenin and expanding to include other areas in the West Bank. She was also one of the candidates on the Jerusalem is Our Date list for the legislative elections that was scheduled to be held in 2021.

Israeli Soldiers Strap Palestinian on Armored Vehicle and Parade in Jenin

Mujahed Raed Al Abbadi was beaten outside his home to an inch of his life by Israeli soldiers in a military vehicle. The cosines and friends he was standing with outside his house in Jenin also suffered gunshot wounds.

But Mujahed was the worse to suffer. He was beaten and shot twice both in the hand and leg. As he fell down in front of the vehicle, one Israeli soldier shot him in the leg. But this was just the beginning because the soldiers decided they wanted a show.

“As soon as the Israeli soldiers arrived, they stepped on my head, they stepped on my head while I was wounded. They hit me in the face, kicked me, hit me on the wound in my leg and twisted and injured my hand…”

With the young men sprawelled in pain on the floor, four soldiers picked him by the arms and legs and hurled him onto the hood of the armored vehicle but he fell down again. The soldiers did it again, this time he maintained position on of the car.

This is the why he put it.  “Every bone was broken. They completely broken the bones in my hand and my leg and they laughed about it and played while they beat me. Two of the soldiers grabbed my hands and two others my feet and started waving me back and forth and throwing me onto the front of the military car, but I fell to the ground.”

But the sadistic fun continued. The soldiers strapped him to the front the vehicle and rode around for another 15 minutes in the different areas of camp before they let him go.

“It was scorching hot he says and my back was burning and I stayed there for 20 minites,” he was reported as saying from his hospital bed.

“He had an open fracture and last a part of his tissues, muscles and skin,~” said Bahaa Abu Hammad, an orthopaedic doctor.

“He was treated in A & E, the wounds were washed, antibiotics, given and X-rays were taken, it later became clear that there was a complicated fracture of the right femur and humerus. He underwent emergency surgery, during which, the fractures were stabilized externally and will require internal fixation at a later date.”
