Israeli Army in Fix Because of Soldiers Shortage

The Israeli army is so short up for manpower it’s calling up its reserve soldiers who were previously exempted from service.

This order is coming from the Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant who have cancelled all previous exemtions from the Israeli army due to the shortage in the number of soldiers.

The army and the Minister’s office have confirmed this step comes “after an assessment of the situation and the scope of activity of regular and reserve forces, and as part of the process that the army is planning to increase the number of individuals serving in it.”

The army is facing an acute shortage of 50,000 soldiers as the fighting in Gaza continues, and the confrontation with Hezbollah in Lebanon  could expand into a full-scale war.

Former head of the Israeli army’s Soldiers’ Complaints Division, Yitzhak Brick said the army is facing a catastrophic situation.

The retired general blamed Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi for not planning to make up for the shortage in ground forces after they were reduced by six divisions over the past 20 years.

He said this “makes it impossible to win in the Gaza Strip, let alone win a regional war in which fighting must be fought in multiple arenas at the same time.”

The Israeli government has ordered the immediate recruitment of 3,000 from the ultra-Orthodox section. It says this would plug the gap at this initial stage. Galant however wants to recruit an additional 10,000 soldiers immediately to fill some of the army’s manpower shortage according to Jo24.

Netanyahu, Gallant Cry Foul of ICC Arrest Warrants

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant continue to feel the heat as arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court (ICC) are on the verge of being issued against them.

Netanyahu and Gallant held consultations, Thursday, with Israeli Attorney-General Gali Baharav Miara to see what can be done before such warrants are issued against them.

The ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan applied for the arrest warrants to be issued against Netanyahu and Gallant back in 21 May, having accused them of “crimes against humanity and war crimes,” in Gaza.

Since May the applications have been under review by an ICC panel of judges who must look at the evidence presented to them by Mr Khan and then sanction the issuance of the arrest warrants.

To circumvent this, the Israeli government wants to establish its own a commission of inquiry over its conduct of the war on Gaza. However, the Israeli Attorney-General is not certain whether such a commission would lead to the withdrawal of the arrest warrants.

On May 20, ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan announced that the court is seeking arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant on charges of committing war crimes.

Khan said at the time that “there are reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant bear criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity” committed in Palestinian territories in Gaza starting from at least Oct. 8 according to Anadolu.

If the arrest warrants are issues, which it seems certain they would, Netanyahu and Gallant would not be able to travel to any of the 124 countries which are members of the ICC without being taken into custody and face criminal prosecution.

While Israel doesn’t recognize the ICC that was established in 2002, nevertheless, the Israeli meeting on Thursday, shows that it is duly concerned because of the international ramifications of the arrest warrants and the criminal stain it would have on Israel and its politicians.

Gantz: Netanyahu, Cabinet Unfit For Office

Former War Cabinet member Benny Gantz, Tuesday, lashed out at Benjamin Netanyahu and his extreme rightwing Cabinet. He said both, the prime minister and his ministers ,are unfit to perform their duties amidst the ongoing war in Gaza.

He was talking about the recent spat between Netanyahu and his Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, according to local radio FM103 as reported in Anadolu.

Gantz, head of the opposition National Unity party, said their differences over the conduct of the war in which Netanyahu continues to speak about “total victory” over Hamas in Gaza do not serve either of the extreme politicians from the Likud Party.

But it is clear Gantz is on the side of Gallant who represents the army’s view which at best wants a political solution to the war. Gantz says the Netanyahu government is not qualified or able to achieve its declared goals of “absolute victory” against the Islamist group Hamas in Gaza and the rest of the Palestinian resistance movement, nor is it able to secure the release of the 115-or Israeli captives held in different parts of Gaza.

For Gantz, the release of those in captivity are a top priority and wants the Israeli government to reach a deal to secure their freedom but many in Israel, including their relatives, feel Netanyahu is not interested in securing a political deal and continues to brush off any mediation efforts.

Animosity

On Monday, Netanyahu and Gallant traded words about the conduct of the war in Gaza Strip. Gallant accused the Prime Minister of obstructing a prisoner swap deal with the Palestinian group. This is while Netanyahu lashed out at the Defense Minister, accusing of following an anti-Israel stance.

Last week, Egyptian, Qatari, and US mediators called on Israel and Hamas to finalize the details of a cease-fire where the hostages can go back to their homes and the guns and missiles can stop.

While Israel said it will send a delegation to the talks, Hamas demanded the mediators present a plan to implement the ceasefire proposal supported by US President Joe Biden that it had agreed to on 2 July.

But indirect talks mediated by the US, Qatar, and Egypt continue to be intractable after 10 months of bloody mayhem. Netanyahu continues to talk about a partial ceasefire where he would secure the release of the hostages and offer no commitment to ending the war, something which Hamas rejects. The group wants the about 1.5 million displaced refugees to return back to their homes including to north Gaza while Netanyahu says this is not possible.

The Israeli onslaught on the Strip has since 7 October 2023 killed roughly 39,900 people while the Gaza Media Office states the number of deaths have already topped the 40,000-mark. These are mostly women and children with the injured standing at over 92,000 people.

More than 10 months into the Israeli onslaught, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water, and medicine reports the Turkish news agency.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which ordered it to immediately halt its military operation in the southern city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians had sought refuge from the war before it was invaded on May 6.

Nasrallah Warns Israel Not to Invade Lebanon

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant threatened Hezbollah, Wednesday, with a potential ground invasion of Lebanon that would “be rapid, surprising and decisive,” Israeli media reported.

“We can swiftly shift our main effort from the south to the north in an instant,” Gallant said during a visit to the northern border, according to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper as reported in Anadolu news.

In response Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, Wednesday pledged, his group’s fighters would wipe out the Israeli army’s tanks should they invade Lebanon reports the Lebanese website naharnet.

Such talk is happening when there are reports the Israeli army is running out of tanks and munitions and manpower as it continues its 10-month war on Gaza.

According to The New Arab  a significant number of tanks have been damaged or are completely out of service amid its Gaza offensive, Israel military sources suggest but they did not reveal the exact number, Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

Nasrallah commented “if your tanks come to Lebanon and its south, you will not suffer from a shortage of tanks, because you will no longer have tanks.”

Making his comments at the end of Ashoura commemorations he warned if Israeli strikes continue on southern Lebanon, Hezbollah will target new settlements in Israel which have not been hit before.

Hezbollah has vowed to keep up its retaliatory attacks on Israel so long as it continues its deadly onslaught on Gaza which began soon after 7 October, 2023.

He said Israel has continued to pay a heavy toll because of its aggression on Gaza.

“The toll includes 9,254 individuals, among them officers and soldiers, with 3,000 amputees, 650 paralyzed, 185 completely blind, and several thousands suffering severe psychological trauma,” he said.

“Our front in Lebanon will remain active as long as the aggression against Gaza, its people, and its resistance continues in all its forms,” Nasrallah asserted and as reported by Press TV.

Despite Ruins, Palestinian Resistance in Top Shape

Jordanian military and strategic expert Nidal Abu Zeid said the videoclips broadcast by the Palestinian resistance groups on the methods of managing operations, ambushes, and targeting the occupation forces, prove they are still cohesive and their command and control system is capable of continuing and inflicting losses on the Israeli occupation forces.

Abu Zeid added the resistance operations are managed by an integrated system. He said the videoclips show there is a commander for the operation who directs, then there is the target reconnaissance based on intelligence gathering with another team videoing and photographing the operations.

These elements confirm such a system in the works  is still fine, stressing the Israeli occupation forces were forced to retreat and not withdraw from Al-Sinaa Street in Tal Al-Hawa after the ambush that caused much losses in reference to the latest Israeli military actions.

Abu Zeid said this prompted the occupation forces to withdraw not just from Tal Al Hawa but from the entire northern Gaza Strip according to Jordan 24.

Abu Zaid pointed out most of the destructive vehicles that appeared in the circulated clips are M113 troop carriers, maintaining that this reinforces the theory that the occupation resorted to using this type of old carriers that were discontinued in 2006 due to the significant losses of modern Tiger troop carriers in the Israeli army.

He indicated the M113 carriers are not as efficient, effective and armored which also explains the high losses among the Israeli soldiers as the Israeli army announced.

That the means the loss curve is still rising between 10 to 20 soldiers per day, which imposes challenges on the occupation army in terms of manpower resources.

Abu Zeid stated the statements of Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi about the urgent need to recruit new elements into the army and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant statements about the necessity of recruiting ultra-Orthodox Jews who are exempt from military service confirm the magnitude of the losses the army is suffering daily.

Abu Zeid continued the Israeli combat doctrine is based on three pillars: Deterrence, early warning, and rapid resolution) pointing out the Palestinian resistance groups have succeeded in stripping the enemy of these and which explains the clear imbalance in the military operations and the occupation’s inability to take the upper hand.

Regarding the ongoing negotiations in Doha, Abu Zeid said Netanyahu is trying to booby-trap these talks and obstruct their progress by imposing conditions related to guarantees for the resumption of military action at any time.

These aim at preventing the return of the displaced to northern Gaza, and evade the issue of negotiating with the Egyptian side on the status of the Philadelphia axis, which will create further conflict between the government and the military generals and leaders of the security services.
