Lancet: Gaza Death Toll Towers to 186,000

The Lancet, British medical journal, estimates the number of those killed in Gaza could be as high as 186,000 people.

In a groundbreaking study titled “Counting the dead in Gaza: difficult but essential” the journal uses different tools of assessments to count the number of those that has been killed in the war on Gaza and says these are “conservatively” be estimated at 186,000 taken into account the number of those who die from disease, destroyed health care infrastructure and the sever shortage of food, water and shelter.

This is breaking news that is being covered in social media with many commenting on this latest figure.

British MP Zarah Sultana says the Lancet is the most respected journal in the world, emphasizing the number of those killed as the journal points out is a “conservative estimation,” while calling on the UK government to halt all arm sales to Israel.

Another says the figure represents 8 percent of the population of Gaza and that “this is a systematic effort to exterminate the Palestinian people, armed and funded, and led by the US.”

Dr Ghassan Abu Sitta, who worked in Al Shifa during the early onslaught of the Israeli army on the hospital says these are “apocalyptic figures” whilst providing a link to the article that is well argued with different point of views.

Whilst another said “but God forbid, we utter the word ‘genocide’”  pointing to the fact the 186,000 killed figure is in 270 days of Israeli slaughter. Yet another says this is figure “is not being broadcast on Western media channels,” with the implication that this latest figure is being hidden away from the public.

Former UK MP Claudia Webbe says don’t forget the 10,000 Palestinians that are still under the rubble, adding what we need is “ceasefire now. End arms sale to Israel. End the occupation. Free Palestine.”

Canadian MP Charlie Angus says this is Israel murder and a “staggering “ number” and “it is genocide. A crime against humanity” and “the EU, the US, Canada and the UK are complicit in these war crimes,” warning that “history is watching.”

The Lancet does point to the figures counted by the Ministry of Health in Gaza, saying contrary to the fact they are being contested by the Israeli authorities, they are being accepted as accurate by the Israeli Intelligence services, the UN and World Health Organization.

The current number of documented deaths as per the Gaza Ministry of Health figures has risen to 38,193 and 87,903 injured.

New Palestinian Exodus! But to Where?

A new Palestinian exodus is being forced but to where? Nobody knows! Palestinians in different neighborhoods of Gaza City are picking up what little left of their belongings and are on the move again.

Thousands of Palestinian families are fleeing their homes in Gaza City amid relentless Israeli occupation bombardment and the threat of imminent invasion.

The Israeli army threatened thousands of displaced Palestinians in Tuffah and Daraj neighborhoods to immediately evacuate and flee at the end of Israeli missiles and bombardment of already ruined homes that are in complete wreckage.

To make sure thousands started moving an Israeli occupation warcraft targeted the home of the Hallou family in the Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City. The home was previously targeted but no matter.

This time the bodies of more family members did not make it. They join other members of the family who are under the rubble.

This is part of the intense attack the city is being subjected to with firebombings in the Tafah, Sabra and Al Daraj neighborhoods, east of Gaza, to force force hundreds of families once more to move out of their homes.

Israeli shelling have also targetted the vicinity of the Bank of Palestine in Gaza City.

This is regarded as the biggest onslaught with Israeli warplanes launching as well, massive airstrikes on the once-plush neighbourhood  al-Remal in the city.

The Israeli military crackdown on civilians begun in the early hourse of Monday morning. “Our forces are now operating in Gaza City, including at the UNRWA headquarters, after intelligence information” an Israeli army announced.

Thousands Flee Gaza City Under Israeli Bombs

Thousands of Palestinians fled large areas of southwest Gaza City when Israeli forces early Monday morning unexpectedly intruded for the first time in over three months and opened heavy fire targeting roads, homes, and residential buildings, resulting in dozens of casualties.

The Israeli forces’ incursion prompted a mass exodus of thousands of Palestinians to the city’s northwestern neighborhoods.

An Anadolu correspondent reported that Israeli military vehicles entered the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, the industrial area, the university zones, and the southern outskirts of the Rimal under heavy fire from fighter jets and artillery.

Massive explosions and continuous air and heavy artillery bombardment targeted eastern, central, and western Gaza City overnight and into Monday morning, witnesses told Anadolu.

This was the first large-scale military offensive since the Israeli army’s attack near Al-Shifa Hospital and its surroundings at the end of March.

Palestinian medical sources reported that the Israeli airstrikes targeted residential buildings, roads, and apartments, resulting in dozens of casualties in various parts of Gaza City.

Due to the intensified bombardment, rescue and medical teams have been unable to move to help the injured or retrieve the dead.

Witnesses also reported that Israeli forces heavily used smoke and gas bombs in different areas of Gaza City, particularly in the new incursion areas.

Thousands of Palestinians fled from the city’s southwestern areas to the northwest and spent the night in the streets without shelter, according to the witnesses.

On Sunday, the Israeli army ordered residents and displaced people in the Tuffah, al-Daraj and Old City neighborhoods to immediately evacuate to shelters in the western part of the city.

The Israeli army has been targeting the Shejaiya neighborhood, which is located near Tuffah, Daraj, and Old City, since June 27.

The army’s actions in these areas in recent days have resulted in dozens of Palestinian casualties.

Israel, flouting a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, has faced international condemnation amid its continued brutal offensive on Gaza since an Oct. 7, 2023 attack by the Palestinian group Hamas.

More than 38,150 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and over 87,800 others injured, according to local health authorities.

Nine months into the Israeli war, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, whose latest ruling ordered it to immediately halt its military operation in the southern city of Rafah, where over a million Palestinians had sought refuge from the war before it was invaded on May 6.
