Lebanon Takes Israel to UNSC

Lebanon on Monday announced plans to file a complaint against Israel at the UN Security Council over Tel Aviv’s repeated attacks on the country’s armed forces in its southern region.

The Lebanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had instructed its permanent mission to the UN in New York to submit a formal complaint to the council condemning Israel’s continuing assaults on the Lebanese military.

Two soldiers died and three others were injured, including one in critical condition, following an Israeli strike on a military outpost in the town of Mari in the Hasbaiyya district, southern Lebanon, the statement noted.

With this latest incident, the total number of Lebanese army soldiers killed by Israeli attacks since Oct. 8, 2023, rose to 36.

The ministry emphasized that the attacks undermine international efforts to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a full cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel and the creation of an arms-free zone between the Blue Line (the boundary separating Lebanon and Israel) and the Litani River in southern Lebanon.

The resolution allows for the presence of the Lebanese army and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the area.

The ministry stressed that ensuring the safety of the Lebanese army and supporting it in carrying out its full duties is crucial to strengthening security along Lebanon’s borders.

Israel launched an air campaign in Lebanon against what it claims are targets of the Hezbollah group in late September, in an escalation from a year of cross-border warfare over Israel’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.

More than 3,500 people have been killed, nearly 15,000 injured and more than 1 million displaced by Israeli attacks since last October, according to Lebanese health authorities according to Anadolu.

Tel Aviv expanded the conflict by launching a ground assault into southern Lebanon on Oct. 1 this year.

Pope Calls For Probe to See If Genocide is Really Happening in Gaza

Pope Francis is calling for an investigation to determine whether a genocide is taking place in the Gaza Strip, the Vatican News agency reported on Sunday.

“According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide. It should be carefully investigated to determine whether it fits into the technical definition formulated by jurists and international bodies,” he said in a passage from his new book of interviews, Hope Never Disappoints: Pilgrims Towards a Better World, which is due out this Tuesday according to Anadolu.

“I am thinking above all of those who leave Gaza in the midst of the famine that has struck their Palestinian brothers and sisters given the difficulty of getting food and aid into their territory,” the pontiff added, referring to Israeli blockades which only allow a trickle of aid required by over 2 million people into the embattled enclave.

Israel has continued a devastating offensive on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, killing nearly 44,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and rendering the enclave almost uninhabitable.

It also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the blockaded enclave.

Israel Blocks Food From North Gaza

Ismail Thawabteh, head of the Gaza Government Media Office has stated that:

Thousands of tons of aid and goods are stuck at Gaza’s closed border crossings, blocked by the Israeli occupation.

However, of the 38 trucks entering Gaza two days ago, 19 of these were stolen by criminal gangs.

Reports indicate that these gangs are coordinating with the Israeli occupation to track and seize the shipments.

Al-Duwairi: Hamas, Jabalia and Fall of 28 Israeli Soldiers

Retired military, strategic expert Major-General Fayez al-Duwairi said the military operations carried out by the Qassam Brigades recently in Jabalia camp, north Gaza, resulted in the deaths and injuries of at least 28 Israeli soldiers, while the occupation army only announced one or two injuries.

The Hamas military wing, the Qassam Brigades in footage, Saturday showed the destruction of seven Israeli military vehicles in the Jabalia camp; including the targeting of Merkava tanks, military bulldozers, and an armored personnel carrier with shells and missiles from close range.

Injured but fighting

Al-Duwairi explained on Al Jazeera the Qassam footage included several remarkable qualitative operations. He noted what was most surprising was the operation made by one of the injured fighters by targeting a Merkava tank using an explosive charge.

He added: “The first [camera] shot has more than one dimension, as the fighter is talking about his injury, which appeared to be in his hand, prompting him to switch from using a launcher to using a suicide charge, which was more primitive than the previous charges.”

The military expert stressed that what the injured fighter did was an “extraordinary act”, explaining that “no ordinary person or even a trained person can do such an act, especially with an injury to his hand and to get to a tank equipped with all capabilities and potentials”.

In detailing the human losses, Al-Duwairi explained that the armored personnel carrier carries 11 soldiers, and the tank carries a minimum of 4 soldiers with the possibility of the number reaching 10 soldiers, noting the operations included targeting thress tanks, two bulldozers and an armored personnel carrier.

Al-Duwairi pointed out to the nature of the area in which the confrontations took place. He stressed it is a completely rubbled destroyed area were fighters are emerge, adding: “They are a group of fighters, if they had reinforcements the occupation army would not have been able to confront them”.

He pointed out in this situation the large mechanisms of the occupation army “become blindspots”, making their targets possible, but reaching them remains extremely difficult due to the presence of the “quadcopter” aircraft covering the skies of the area.
