Voices From Under The Rubble of Gaza

More than 10,000 Palestinian men and women are missing under the rubble in the Gaza Strip, with no way to recover them or properly bury their remains, in a blatant violation of international law amid total international inaction to assist in their retrieval.

Recovering the bodies of the victims of Israel’s nearly 10 months of deadly and destructive military attacks on civilians will be extremely difficult, given the lack of heavy machinery and equipment for civil defense crews and the difficulty of their work. Furthermore, the Israeli army has deliberately and methodically targeted and destroyed this machinery and equipment, while preventing any replacement equipment entry to the Gaza Strip.

In addition to intentionally using weapons with enormous destructive power that leave tons of rubble that impede the removal and recovery of bodies from underneath, Israel has a pattern of systematic operations to prevent and obstruct the recovery of victims and missing persons from under the rubble, as documented by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor. These operations include targeting civil defense crews, rescue teams, and families trying to recover the bodies of victims, as well as preventing the entry of fuel necessary to operate what remains of the heavy machinery and preventing the entry of equipment.

Mrs. Maryam Imad, 19, informed the Euro-Med Monitor team that on 7 December 2023, two of her family’s homes in Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, were bombed by Israeli warplanes. Among the 36 people who were inside were her parents, two of her brothers, one of whom was a child, and her grandfather, her uncles, their wives, and their children.

She added: “After more than 42 days without hearing anything, we eventually discovered that the Israeli bombing had killed every single person who was buried beneath the debris. In early April of last year, I, the sole survivor of my family, tried with my two uncles to retrieve the bodies, but we were unable to extricate any of them.

“Then the Civil Defense arrived the following day and managed to retrieve a few bodies, while the remainder were buried beneath the debris. We have not been able to bury them yet because we do not have the necessary equipment, and we still demand their recovery even though I realize they have decomposed over the course of several months. We want to bury their remains properly,” she said.

According to Wissam Al-Sakani’s report to the Euro-Med Monitor team, on 22 November 2023 Israeli warplanes bombed his family’s home, which consisted of five flats in the northern Gaza Strip’s Beit Lahia area. The incident resulted in the deaths of approximately 45 people, including two of his children.

Al-Sakani said that despite weeks of efforts to extricate the victims, fifteen of them remain beneath the debris, and their recuperation is being hampered by the massive amount of debris, the lack of equipment, and the frequent bombing of the area.

Ahmed Al-Bahnasawy informed the Euro-Med Monitor team that  on 31 October 2023, Israeli warplanes bombed his home within a fire belt that targeted a residential square in Haret Al-Sanaida in Jabalia Camp, the northern Gaza Strip, which is home to about 40 houses.

About 400 people, including all 18 of Al-Bahnasawy’s family members, perished in the massive Israeli attack, he explained. Over the course of several weeks, dozens of bodies were excavated, but due to a lack of equipment and the extent of the destruction, about 50 people were left under the rubble and could not be retrieved.

Most of the victims’ bodies were found in simple one- or two-story buildings or on the streets. However, recovering dead bodies from the bottom of multi-story buildings is very difficult because civil defense and rescue teams have to rely on outdated tools, manual hammers, and antiquated technology to search for victims under tens of thousands of tons of rubble, which makes their job less efficient.

International pressure must be brought to compel Israel to fulfill its legal obligations and bring in trucks, special equipment, and sufficient fuel, given the urgent need to clear the debris, locate bodies, and recoverthem with special procedures to identify and bury them in marked graves, and ensure the victims’ and their families’ rights to a respectful and appropriate burial in accordance with their religious rituals.

Since most of the victims’ bodies have already decomposed, the Israeli policy of obstructing and impeding their recovery plays a significant role in the spread of fatal illnesses and epidemics in the Gaza Strip. This increases the risks to civilian public health, which is already in decline as a result of Israel endangering the health and well-being of over two million Palestinians, nearly half of whom are children, by destroying vital civilian infrastructure, cutting off fuel supplies needed to treat wastewater, making it impossible to dispose of waste, and forcing people to drink contaminated water.

It is a flagrant and compound breach of international humanitarian law and international human rights law to prevent and obstruct the recovery of victims’ bodies from under the rubble, in violation of the rights to investigations, redress, and reparations, as well as the final right of all people to be treated with dignity and respect when their bodies are buried. In addition, the fact that thousands of Palestinians are still missing is a further crime against their families, who endure terrible psychological injury. These violations are all part of Israel’s crime of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, which will have a significant negative impact on thousands of Palestinian families in the region, causing them great spiritual and psychological harm.

As these violations involve the willful concealment of evidence linked to the crime of genocide committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip, preventing the recovery of bodies also violates rulings made by the International Court of Justice regarding the need to stop genocide in the Gaza Strip and protect civilians.

The fact that so many victims remain buried beneath the debris and that attempts to exhume bodies have been unsuccessful for several months demonstrate Israel’s willful use of different kinds of bombs, ammunition, and massive disproportionate force against Palestinian civilians and their property in defiance of international humanitarian law, such as the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention, which aims to safeguard civilians during times of war.

Palestinian bodies must be recovered immediately after death, as the current state of these decaying corpses poses a threat to public safety. The spread of epidemics, which has already begun and has been observed for several months now, will have further detrimental effects on the environment and public as evidenced by frequently-reported infections and infectious disease-related deaths. These conditions will also seriously jeopardize the Strip’s long-term environmental health and cause environmental destruction to the point of ecocide, rendering the Gaza Strip unfit for human habitation.

Israel is required by international law to abide by certain rules, including the requirement to protect and respect dead people’s bodies during armed conflicts and take all reasonable steps to ensure that the dead are treated wtih dignity and to prevent the mutilation of bodies. The international community must work together to ensure that Israel immediately stops its military attacks against civilians in the Gaza Strip, and is held responsible for all its crimes.

American Weapons, Israeli Slaughter

The US continues to provide military aid to Israel for its operations in the Gaza Strip, despite mounting civilian casualties and violations of international law Anadolu news reports.

Besides being Tel Aviv’s most important political ally, Washington remains the largest supplier of weapons to the Israeli military.

The Congress approved $17 billion in military aid to Israel under a $95 billion foreign military assistance package in April.

Israel has killed more than 38,000 Palestinians since a cross-border attack that claimed 1,200 lives. The actions have triggered a humanitarian disaster.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the Gaza assault has unsettled US President Joe Biden. Still, there has not been a serious restriction on arms supply.

Netanyahu even accused the Biden administration of restricting military aid, with US officials confirming a pause in shipment that included 2,000-pound bombs, citing concerns over civilian casualties in the besieged enclave according to the Turkish news agency.

Leaked figures to the media, however, suggest that Washington’s action came too late and may not be effective in practice.

Official sources, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, revealed that from Oct. 7-June 28, the US shipped at least 14,000 MK-84 bombs used in bomber aircraft to Israel, along with 6,500 227 kg bombs, 3,000 precision-guided Hellfire missiles, 1,000 bunker-buster bombs, 2,600 small-caliber bombs dropped from aircraft and other munitions.

The Biden administration also allowed a symbolic one-time shipment of one-ton aircraft munitions in May.

An internal memo shared among Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives and other members of Congress said the halted shipment of one-ton bombs accounted for less than 1% of military support provided by the US to Israel since Oct. 7.

US has sent weapons to Israel by air

An official speaking to CNN did not deny shipment flights were detected between US Air Force bases and Israel, and said the flights represent a steady flow of Pentagon aid to Israel.

The CNN said from October to January 2024, an average of 15 cargo flights occurred daily, later decreasing to about five.

Records indicated that tracking some military flights was difficult due to frequent transponder shutdowns.

Research by the Haaretz newspaper in Israel revealed that 173 military and civilian cargo flights originating from US military bases worldwide transported weapons and ammunition to Israel.

Most of the flights landed at the Nevatim Airbase near the southern Israeli city of Be’er Sheva.

There were 22 flights in October, 47 in November, 32 in December, 20 in January, eight in February, 11 in March, 17 in April, seven in May and nine in June.

The shipments are said to have included 155mm artillery shells, Joint Direct Attack Munition guidance kits, bombs, missiles for Israel’s air defense system, and drones and ammunition for the Iron Dome defense system.

Israel receiving $310 billion in aid from US

The US provides Israel with $3.8 billion in military aid annually, regardless of whether it is involved in a conflict.

According to the most recent records compiled by the Council on Foreign Relations, Israel appears to have received the largest share of US foreign aid since its establishment in 1948, totaling $310 billion.

US legally ensures Israel’s ‘qualitative military edge’ in region

In 2008, another law passed in the US introduced the concept of “Qualitative Military Edge,” a multi-faceted endeavor to ensure Israel has access to technologically advanced defense systems. It is also said to involve building operational capability through exercises, training, and personnel exchanges.

Hence, Israel is expected to be the first country to access the most advanced US military weapons and platforms.

Israel has so far received 39 out of the 50 advanced F-35 fighter jets it purchased from the US. But a $3 billion agreement was signed last month for an additional 25 of the fighter jets, world’s most advanced, which would bring the Israeli Air Force’s F-35 fleet to 75 in the coming years.

Israel’s use of US weapons violated international law

A State Department report in May said Israel’s use of US-provided weapons in Gaza likely violated international humanitarian law.

The report, after a presidential review following pressure from lawmakers and others, however, stopped short of making any final conclusions, and did not link specific US weapons to individual attacks by Israeli forces in Gaza, Anadolu ends its feature.

Despite 200 Missiles Israel Sees ‘No Escalation’

The north of occupied Palestine is in a flare up with the Israeli army and Hezbollah in battle and intense exchange of fire. The war drums are beating on the Israel-Lebanese border once again.

The latest skirmishes are the result of the assassination of military commander Mohammad Naimah Nasser according to Hezbollah source speaking to Al Jazeera.

It’s reported that Israeli soldiers have been injured following a double attack by Hezbollah involving drones and rockets launched in northern Israel and which created multiple fires including blazes in the occupied Golan Heights.

The fires were the result of an unprecedented barrage of drones and rockets launched from southern Lebanon that struck the Galilee and the Golan Heights with sirens going off non-stop for 40 minutes.

Reports also show over 100 rockets were fired towards the Israeli-occupied territories within the span of few minutes with explosions heard after a major drone attack with 25 drones falling on Israeli settlements.

Officials in the Israeli army are still playing the fire incidents down saying there is “no indication of a major escalation” according to Israel’s Channel 12 despite the killing of one Israeli soldier and the wounding of others in the Golan Heights.

There are reported fires in Nahariya in northern Israel with Hezbollah missiles targeting the 91st division in the Israeli Ilayit headquarters. It is reported that trains have stopped running between Haifa and Nahariya due to the dangerous security situation.

Rockets also landed in a commercial center in Accre with reports of a direct hit after sirens went off in the town as well as the Haifa Bay.

Hezbollah latter stated that it fired more that 200 missiles of various types on the Galilee and the occupied Golan Heights and these were as a direct result of the Israeli aggression on Gaza.

The rockets and fires created a wave of evacuations from northern Israel through army helicopters. There was an onslaught on the Yarden Barracks and Biet Hamqass in which a a soldier was killed and three others wounded as a result of a direct hit on a military vehicle.

Israeli settlers are reported to be vey angry with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ““because he left us to our fate and he is the most failed prime minister in the history of Israel.”

“It was the rainiest day [Thursday]. Dozens of fires broke out in thousands of acres of forests and open areas. There are forests that were completely burned and it will take 10 to 15 years to restore them.” Director of the Upper Galilee and Golan region regarding the fires that broke out Thursday in the north due to launch rockets from Lebanon:

Itzhak Brik  Says Netanyahu is Lying on Gaza

Reserve Israeli general Itzhak Brik is a tireless critic of the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. He says “what is happening in Gaza is a big disgrace. We are losing a lot, and [Netanyahu] throws dust in the eyes,” the Quds News Network quotes him saying.

“The IDF realizes that Hamas cannot be defeated and soldiers are being sent to their deaths. Herzi Helevi wants to stay in his position until the end of his term; he is deceptive,” he adds.

“…officers, brigade commanders, and soldiers talk to me daily from the field, informing me of what is happening every minute. Yesterday, an officer spoke to me and said, ‘Brik, keep going strong with what you are doing.’ He is in Rafah now and told me that I am truthful in every word I say,” Brik told Israel’s Channel 7.

In reference to statements made by government about the war he said “they deceive the public and don’t tell the truth…we are not winning.  We do not confront Hamas, they don’t even stand in front of us.

All the statements that the army killed 100 here, and 200 there are incorrect. The [Hamas] fighters are underground; they come out, launch rockets and return. They are blowing up houses and using explosives against us and we are being killed,” the retired General said.

“There is no such closure of the tunnels that reach Sinai. These tunnels which they call Hames’s oxygen tubes have been used to transport weapons and combat equipment and the army claims to have controlled the Philadelphi Route and closed the tunnels is not true.

To close these tunnels, a canal 9km long and 50 meters deep must be dug because these tunnels are located 50 meters underground and all weapons and equipment come through them. The army does not intend to dig a canal 9km long and 50 meters deep,” he says.

Are they deceiving us? The army chief of staff said that the army is close to victory in Rafah, the Channel 7 interviewer interjects.

“They are clearly deceiving the public and lying to them,” Brik says.
