Israeli War: Gaza Death Toll Spikes to Over 60,000

At least 60,138 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

A ministry statement said that 104 bodies were brought to hospitals in the last 24 hours, while 399 people were injured, taking the number of injuries to 146,269 in the Israeli onslaught.

“Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them,” it added.

The ministry also noted that 60 Palestinians were killed and over 195 injured while trying to get humanitarian aid in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed while seeking aid to 1,239, with over 8,152 others wounded, since May 27.

The Israeli army resumed its attacks on the Gaza Strip on March 18 and has since killed 8,970 people and injured 34,228 others, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold in January.

On Monday, Israeli rights groups B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel accused Israel of committing a genocide in Gaza, citing the systematic destruction of Palestinian society and the deliberate dismantling of the territory’s healthcare system.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.

Why Are Israeli Soldiers Committing Suicide?

A total of 16 soldiers committed suicide since the beginning of 2025. The latest figure were unveiled by the Israeli official Kan Channel. The suicides among the Israeli soldiers serving in Gaza are part of a growing trend related to a rise in post-traumatic stress disorder among regular and reserve soldiers.

In terms of army distribution, eight regular soldiers, seven from the reserves and one conscript decided to take away their lives because of the pressure of fighting. This is while 21 soldiers committed suicide in 2024, compared to 17 cases in 2023.

The Kan Channel stated these figures are highlighted within the context of the ongoing war since 7 October, 2023. Although official Israel sources are “messaging” the figures they have acknowledged that about 3,770 soldiers are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorders while more than half of the more 19,000 who were wounded over the past two years are receiving psychological treatment as per the Rehabilitation Department of the Israeli Ministry of Defense.

However the Israeli army are attempting to downplay the significance of the suicide figures. It stated that “it is impossible to assert a general increase in the suicide rate.” But Kan emphasizes the statistics confirms a significant increase in suicides among reserve soldiers taking part in combat operations.

Kan added that the increasing suicide rates are becoming a phenomenon and needs to be combated by the Israeli army organizing psychological support workshops and referring returning soldiers to psychological specialists. Experts warn that the existing support programs are not sufficient.

In this context, the channel reported the military censorship authorized, Monday, the publishing of the name of Ariel Tamin, the soldiers who served in the Investigation and Forensic Examination Unit and committed suicide. His body was found inside his home in the town of Ofakim after he took away his life two days earlier.

The channel also noted similar suicide cases have been recorded in recent weeks, including that of Daniel Adry, a reserve soldier who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and was later recognized by the occupation army as a “casualty victim” as reported by Jo24.

Military Expert: Israel Will Not be Able to Occupy Gaza

Military and strategic expert Nidal Abu Zeid stated that Gaza is no longer just a battlefield, but has been transformed into a laboratory for contemporary colonial violence, where the Israeli occupation has attempted various military plans but failed to achieve its objectives.

Abu Zeid told Jordan 24 that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements about the option of occupying Gaza are part of an attempt to raise the military cost for the resistance in order to push it to make political concessions. He pointed out that current data confirms that occupying Gaza requires more ground forces, which is unavailable given the state of depletion the occupation army is suffering from.

Abu Zeid explained that the images of military buildup recently broadcast by the occupation are mostly still images, used in military psychology as a means of achieving the effect of shock and intimidation without any real action on the ground.

He pointed out that the occupation has adopted the same media approach that accompanied the failed “Gideon’s Wagons” operation, hyping up the possibility of expanding control or annexing parts of the Gaza Strip. This has led to conflicting objectives in the war and created a state of strategic confusion, which explains the military’s reluctance to pursue the military option for a prolonged period.

Airdrops Fail

Israel allowed only 109 aid trucks into the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, but most of them were looted amid escalating security chaos, the Gaza Government Media Office reported.

Four of six airdrops also fell into hazardous zones, it said.

“Today, 109 aid trucks entered Gaza, with the majority looted and robbed due to the security chaos systematically and deliberately imposed by the Israeli occupation,” the office said in a statement as published in Anadolu.

It added that Israel aims to “sabotage aid distribution and deprive civilians of assistance as part of engineering chaos and starvation.”

The office pointed out that the airdrop operations failed to reach those in need, noting that “four of six airdrops landed in areas under Israeli military control or neighborhoods where civilians had been ordered to evacuate.”

It added that anyone in these areas “faces direct targeting and killing,” making the airdrops “not only futile but also dangerous to the starving population.”

The media office emphasized that Gaza requires at least 600 aid trucks and fuel daily to meet civilians’ basic needs.

Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza for 18 years and since March 2 has shut down all crossings, blocking the entry of aid convoys and ignoring international calls to reopen them.

At least 147 people have died of starvation since October 2023, including 88 children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

This comes as Israel on Sunday announced plans for localized temporary pauses in fighting to allow aid delivery through designated safe corridors amid mounting accusations that such measures are an attempt to whitewash its role in the deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing more than 60,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave and led to food shortages.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.

Gaza = Famine Caused by Israel

This is a statement made by Jolien Veldwijk, CARE Palestine Country Director

The testimonies of our colleagues and partners, combined with the analysis of technical experts are clear – famine is happening in Gaza. Palestinians are suffering a manmade famine, caused by Israel’s siege and the deliberate obstruction of aid, and fueled by the inaction of world leaders. The haunting images of emaciated children are evidence of a failure of humanity to act. Using starvation as a weapon is a war crime under international humanitarian law.

More than 100 deaths from malnutrition have been recorded already. Sadly, we know this will accelerate in the coming days. It is already too late to save the lives of many of the most vulnerable, including the elderly, disabled and infants. Over 40% of pregnant and breastfeeding women are severely malnourished, while nearly one in five children under the age of five in Gaza City is acutely malnourished. Bringing people back from the brink of starvation requires specialized medical treatment, not just food and water. For many, especially children, the damage will be permanent.

After more than 20 months of political inaction, world leaders must finally take decisive action. We urge the international community to finally secure an immediate and lasting ceasefire, the release of hostages and arbitrarily detained people, and full, safe, unhindered, immediate and sustained access to principled humanitarian aid to all people in need in Gaza. Israeli authorities must end the siege on Gaza, immediately open all border crossings to let aid in and allow humanitarians to do our jobs safely.
